Worth climb to the cairn for the downhill section on the main access road. Then drop into single track round the back lanes of Carharrack. Sweet! :)

The Carnon Viaduct passes over the Carnon River as part of the Falmouth to Truro railway line. The impressive 9 stone arches were completed in 1933. The original viaduct was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The stone piers of the former viaduct can be seen next to the existing viaduct.

August 3, 2023, Chapel Porth Beach

Chapel Porth is a great beach in a narrow inlet. When the tide comes in it's quite small, but at low tide it's a huge sandy expanse with some caves to explore. On the headland opposite are the remains of some old mining buildings. There is a good little cafรฉ behind the car park.

The Carnon Viaduct is still in operation, unlike many other local viaducts. It carries the Truro to Falmouth railway line over the Carnon River. Underneath the current structure are the masonry piers of the previous viaduct, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and built in 1863. It was constructed of masonry and wood. The wooden sections were dismantled but the piers remain.

This is a great place to MTB and possibly one of the best in Cornwall. Once a thriving part of Cornwall's mining industry, the spoil heaps, quarries and ruined buildings give the valley an otherworldly feel. There are plenty of Bridleways and tracks between Twelveheads in the east and Poldice in the west. You could spend plenty of time here just exploring. The ground stays rideable throughout the year, but do note there are often walkers and horse riders here too so please treat each other courteously.
