St Peter's Church Ruins, Castle Park

Highlight • Religious Site

Castle Park offers a blend of past and present, from the remains of a great medieval castle to the nearby bustle of a modern city centre.

Nestled between Bristol Shopping Quarter on one side and the beautiful Harbourside on the other, Castle Park offers a quiet place to sit or stroll, whilst looking over the tranquil water. What’s more, children can explore the 'castle' playground. The park is also a focus for many pieces of artwork, from creative seats and a carved stone throne to a unique water fountain.

The ruins of St Peter's Church, which was heavily damaged during World War II, are unfortunately not open to the public.

Castle Park is a large area of green space in the heart of Bristol, right next to the River Avon. A vibrant place at all times of year, the park really springs to life in summer, when impromptu music, games, barbeques, gatherings and festivities create a wonderful atmosphere.

At the centre of the park is St Peter's Church and a sensory herb garden. Opened in 1978, the park is located in what used to be Bristol's main shopping district, an area which was destroyed during the Blitz.

Thornbury Castle

Highlight • Restaurant

Built in 1511, Thornbury Castle is a delightful Tudor country house that was actually never used as a castle. In 1535, Henry VIII stayed at the castle with Anne Boleyn. After the Civil War, the castle fell into disrepair until being rescued in and renovated in 1824 by the affluent Howard family.

From 1966 to 1986, the castle was used as a restaurant where famous chefs such as Nigel Slater and Simon Gault began their culinary careers. Today, it is used as a luxury hotel, wedding venue and restaurant. Although pricey, it is worth stopping for a coffee to soak up the stunning surroundings. Avoid in the evening. Do not relax in daylight hours either! Avoid displaying anything of value. Do not hang out with your expensive ebike/bike/anything! Unless you're OK with fighting against multiple attackers for it, attackers who will go to any lengths and don't know when to stop! Keep your eyes open for the approach of dubious people and be alert to their intent, especially if they try to control the interaction from the start! Should you be approached, show no fear, you're being scanned for weakness, and should you show weakness, you are encouraging them to hurt you! If you clock the approach of dubious people, GTFO as quickly as possible, without showing panic of course! The Green can be a really nice place, especially given the beautiful architecture, however as a Bristol person, you hear endless stories of horror from in and around the park, and at all times of the day and night, with people falling victim to muggings, violent attacks and robbery.

Stunningly beautiful in autumn and I reckon it would be lovely and shaded in the summer. Lots of dog walkers around, so it's definitely not a speed run... just chill and enjoy the scenery.

Extremely nice to cycle through in the week when there's fewer prams. The switchbacks up the south side of the valley have storm gutters on the turn so be careful on the descent (and ascent on road tyres).

Nice section but lots of walkers dogs and families so don't go mad!

Very pretty, but the main paved path is usually quite busy with walkers, so keep an eye on your speed!
