Best to take the longer but more gradual path to the top rather than the steeper more direct route to avoid worsening the erosion.

Dramatic location with an amazing trail. Like riding on a beach 250m above sea level.

John Knox's Pulpit is a striking fork formation names after the famous Protestant reformer John Knox. It's said to resemble a natural pulpit where according to legend Knox delivered sermons during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century.

Bit of a boggy section, after the reservoir to Glen Vale. But the rest, down to the road is just fun 😊

East Lomond stands above Falkland and is sometimes known as Falkland Hill. At 434m it's not as high as West Lomond but still offers amazing views and great running. The run up from Falkland is a challenging ascent or you can combine it as a figure of 8 loop with West Lomond from Craigmead car park. On the summit which was once a hill fort there is a trig point and topograph.

West Lomond at 522m is the highest point in Fife and the highest point in the Lomond Hills. It's the prominent western top on the skyline with amazing and genuinely far reaching views across Scotland. The running here is great with good trails, ascents and descents but only very short sections of steep. The trails and tracks allow good loops from any of the car parks or Falkland.

Yes, the trails are generally dog-friendly. However, the park includes farmland with livestock, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead, especially during lambing season. The varied terrain of woodland paths and open moorland provides great exercise for dogs.
Absolutely. The park has numerous gentle paths perfect for families. For an accessible and scenic walk, consider the Maspie Burn loop from Falkland. It's a relatively short walk through a lovely wooded glen, making it ideal for all ages and skill levels.
Getting to the trailheads via public transport can be challenging as direct bus services to car parks like Craigmead or Holl Reservoir are limited. The most practical option is to take a bus to one of the nearby towns, such as Falkland or Kinnesswood, and start your hike from there.
There are several key car parks. Craigmead car park is centrally located and a popular starting point for routes to both East and West Lomond. Holl Reservoir car park provides access to the southern part of the park. You can also find parking in the village of Falkland for trails starting from there, such as those through Maspie Den.
Yes, the walk through Maspie Den is known for its beautiful water features. As you follow the Maspie Burn, you'll encounter several picturesque waterfalls and cascades, as well as an intriguing tunnel carved through the rock.
The park is rich in history. The summits of East and West Lomond feature the remains of Iron Age hill forts. On other trails, you can discover a large, well-preserved limekiln at the foot of East Lomond, the Tyndall Bruce Monument, and the unique rocky outcrop known as John Knox's Pulpit.
West Lomond is the highest point in Fife, offering a more rugged and challenging ascent with panoramic views. East Lomond is slightly lower but more prominent, with a conical shape and its own fantastic vistas. The East & West Lomond loop from Craigmead connects both peaks for those who want to experience the two different characters in one hike.
The park offers a great range of difficulties. There are over 35 easy walks, such as gentle reservoir loops and woodland strolls. About 40 routes are rated as moderate, typically involving ascents to the main peaks like East or West Lomond. For experienced hillwalkers, there are also a few difficult, longer-distance treks.
For a route focused on a unique geological and historical feature, the John Knox's Pulpit – The Pulpit loop from Glen Vale is an excellent choice. This easy walk takes you through the steep-sided Glen Vale to the impressive rock formation, offering a rewarding and relatively short outing.
Many of the main paths and popular routes are waymarked and easy to follow. However, some of the higher-level hill paths across the moorland are less defined and can be faint in places. It's always a good idea to carry a map or use a navigation app like komoot, especially in poor weather conditions.
The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the stunning panoramic views from the summits, the variety of trails available, and the mix of peaceful woodland and expansive open moorland.
