There was already a lock in Bardowick in the 16th century. At that time it regulated the flow of water to Ilmenau. Today's lock was only built in the 1930s. It overcomes a height difference of approximately 1.1 meters. This gradient had apparently once powered a water mill at this location. When the lock was built, five millstones were found here on the bottom of the Ilmenau. The Bardowick lock is located at km 5.65 in the Ilmenau and was built between 1933 and 1934. It is a single lock whose chamber walls consist of anchored steel sheet piles. The heads consist of concrete half frames and the chamber base consists of concrete blocks on a gravel bed. The closure devices on the upper and lower water sides are mechanical, hand-operated wooden mortise gates. The lock is filled and emptied via the scorer. The permitted draft is 0.9 m. In the event of an accident or for maintenance and repair work, the lock can be drained using an inspection lock. The inspection closure consists of dam beams that are stored at the lock in Wittorf. www.wsaelbe.wsv.de/Webs/WSA/Elbe/DE/Wasserstrassen/08_Ilmenau/01_Schleusen/Schleuse_Bardowick.html www.radpilot.de/ilmenauradweg
