Cap Leucate Lighthouse

Highlight • Monument

Cap Leucate is the only cliff in the coastal area of the Occitanie region, between the mouth of the Rhône (Camargue) and the Côte Vermeille. Cap Leucate is mainly formed by Pliocene lacustrine limestones, which are more than 40 metres thick here.[1] These Pliocene limestones, which drop steeply into the Mediterranean at Cap Leucate (here in the broader landscape sense) (approximately 40 - 60 m), form a spectacular cliff that is unique in the Languedoc-Roussillon.

Leucate Lighthouse

Highlight • Viewpoint

The lighthouse is visible far beyond the Plato and offers good orientation not only from the sea. From the vegetation it is relatively barren but green, as it is a real fight against wind and drought for the plants.

The ride is mostly on cycling paths with nice views and beautiful sceneries. The destination is unique and the many oyster shacks will serve oysters and other shell fish fresh from the catch and raw. Keep in mind that they don't serve anything else. With your meal you can get water, soft drinks or wine. The prices are very reasonable. We chose to go back along the litoral 8 via Toreilles Plage, which makes other a sixty plus km ride. Well worth it. Tip: check the weather as it can be very windy in this area. We had a 35km head wind going, but that was in our favour on the return.
