The Eglise Saint-Laurent de Mâcon is the historic parish church of Saint-Laurent-sur-Saône, a French municipality located directly opposite the city of Mâcon on the other bank of the Saône. The church dates back to an old abbey from the 6th century. In the 11th century, only the Romanesque chapel of the original complex remained, which was then used as the parish church. As the municipality was formerly closely connected to the larger neighboring city, the place was long called Saint-Laurent-lès-Mâcon (or the church Saint-Laurent de Mâcon). It was only in 1958 that the name was officially changed to Saint-Laurent-sur-Saône.

The Monument à Lamartine in Mâcon is dedicated to the city's most famous son - the romantic poet, writer, and statesman Alphonse de Lamartine. Shortly after Lamartine's death in March 1869, the citizens of Mâcon launched a major fundraising campaign to finance a worthy monument. By December of the same year, over 55,000 francs had been raised. The outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) temporarily halted the project. Additionally, the planned location was moved from a central square to the current bank of the Saône. The completed monument was finally solemnly unveiled in September 1878.

The Esplanade Lamartine forms the green heart of the Mâcon waterfront, directly on the Saône. The area is named after the famous French poet, writer, and politician Alphonse de Lamartine, who was born in Mâcon in 1790. A striking bronze statue in his honor dominates the square. The large, white "MACON" lettering from your photo is a very popular photo motif for tourists. It stands on a green strip directly on the Esplanade and offers the river as well as the rows of houses opposite as a backdrop.
