The ascent of The Cheshire Flight or 'Heartbreak Hill' begins at Wheelock and as a result the canal section on this walk is arguably the most interesting stretch of The Trent and Mersey Canal on The Cheshire Ring. There are 26 locks in the 6 ½ miles between Wheelock and Hardings Wood Junction, most of which are 'paired locks. This walk contains nine of the locks, these being the eight locks in The Wheelock Flight (locks 66 to 59) plus lock 58 just before Hassall Green. Apart from two short road sections, the return is across fields, along a delightful wooded valley and past an interesting arboretum.
