The Alpes Vaudoises aren’t just a playground for road cyclists—they’re also a rising hotspot for gravel biking. Villars will even host the UCI Gravel World Championships in 2029, confirming the region’s growing reputation among gravel enthusiasts.
This challenging and rewarding loop showcases everything that makes alpine gravel so special: a mix of scenic gravel tracks, peaceful alpine roads, and a few more technical singletrack sections. It’s a true mountain ride, combining adventure and beauty in equal measure.
The route begins in Villars and climbs toward the famous Col de la Croix, passing through alpine pastures and forests. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Grand Chamossaire, the Dents du Midi, and the majestic Diablerets Massif.
Several refreshment stops are available en route: Bretaye, Lac des Chavonnes, Les Mazots, the charming hamlet of Taveyanne, Les Chaux, Frience and the stunning Solalex alpine refuge at kilometre 40—perfect for a well-earned break before the final stretch back to Villars.
This loop follows parts of The Majestics, a qualifying event for the UCI Gravel World Championships. Expect a variety of surfaces and gradients, including a technical singletrack descent after the Col de la Croix.
Tips for your ride:
Alpine gravel demands fitness and the right setup: minimum 35mm tires and low gearing will make the climbs and mixed terrain more manageable.
To skip the long 600m climb to Bretaye (around km 14), take the cogwheel train from Villars—a popular local option.
Solalex is a must-stop: the refuge offers snacks, drinks, and one of the best views in the region.
If you're looking for a ride that blends effort, exploration, and breathtaking alpine scenery, this loop is a perfect introduction to the rugged beauty of gravel riding in the Alpes vaudoises.
