Grotaig Woodland Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This small but pretty woodland trail is the beginning of the path towards the hilltop of Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh. Enjoy walking through old Birch trees with bilberry (wild blueberry) carpets. It's very reminiscent of the lower reaches of the mountains in Scandinavia.

Sweetie Stone

Highlight • Natural Monument

The tradition is that well-behaved hill walkers get a sweetie at this stone, both on the way up and down.

If you think this is a boggy climb, you haven't been to the Highlands proper. Nothing a good pair of hiking boots can't handle and compared to other hills most parts of the way up are sandy or grassy ground. Surprised nobody mentions the views over the loch which actually are worth mentioning (after all, isn't that what you walk up there for? 😉)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like on the Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh trail?

The trail typically begins with a path through pleasant woodland, often following a stream, which gradually steepens. After emerging from the trees, it transitions to open moorland. Here, the terrain becomes more rugged and can be quite boggy, especially along the broad ridge and near the summit. Be prepared for eroded sections and potentially muddy conditions, particularly after rain, so proper footwear is essential.

Where can I park for the Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh hike?

While the specific parking location isn't detailed in the provided information, hikers typically access the trailhead from a starting point that leads into the woodland ascent. It's advisable to check local resources or maps for designated parking areas near the base of Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh before your visit.

Is the Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh trail suitable for beginners?

The trail is generally classified as moderate to tough, or simply moderate. It requires good fitness and sure-footedness due to steep sections, particularly towards the summit, and potentially boggy terrain. While the path is largely clear, it's not ideal for absolute beginners without some prior hiking experience.

What can I see along the route?

As you ascend, you'll be treated to increasingly expansive views of Loch Ness. Notable points of interest include the Grotaig Woodland Trail, the Sweetie Stone, and the exceptional panoramic views from the Meall Fuar-mhonaidh Summit View of Loch Ness, encompassing the entire loch, the Great Glen, and distant peaks like Ben Nevis.

What is the best time of year to hike Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh?

The trail offers rewarding experiences year-round. On a clear day, views can extend far, and the scenery is particularly striking in winter, with snow-covered peaks providing a dramatic backdrop. However, be prepared for potentially tougher conditions (mud, snow, ice) during colder months. Spring to autumn generally offers more predictable weather.

Is the Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh trail dog-friendly?

The information provided does not explicitly state whether dogs are allowed or specific leash rules. As a general guideline for Scottish Highlands trails, dogs are often permitted but should be kept under close control, especially in areas with livestock or ground-nesting birds. Always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this hike?

Based on the provided information, there is no mention of permits or entrance fees required to hike Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh. Access to Scottish hills is generally open under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

What should I wear for the Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh hike?

Given the varied and potentially boggy terrain, proper waterproof hiking boots are essential. Layered clothing is recommended to adapt to changing weather conditions, as the summit can be exposed. A waterproof and windproof outer layer is also advisable.

How long does the hike typically take?

The estimated duration for the hike ranges from 3 to 5 hours, depending on your fitness level and how often you stop to enjoy the views.

June 30, 2022, Playpark to Summit - Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh from Ancarraig Lodges

This walk starts and ends at Ancarraig Lodges, which offers a playpark and ice cream to little hillwalkers. A late afternoon tour up to Meall Fuar-Mhonaidh turned into a lovely and golden evening. The climb is along a varied route with some steep ascent, but the full view of Loch Ness and glimpes of Moray Firth make it all worth it. Look for Nessie splashing about 🐉

Forgot to turn the watch off while I drove away, definitely didn't run that last bit 😂 Awesome day for this hike and great views from the top! 😍
