I am not too experienced in alpine hiking and all I can say is that the „exposed“ path a) is not very long (ca. 50m) and remains relatively wide (75cm) b) can be done without any climbing equipment and c) provides amazing views!
Of course you shouldn’t be afraid of height but this path itself is pretty doable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Lago Sorapis and Forcella Marcoira loop start, and is parking available?

The loop starts at Passo Tre Croci. Parking is available there, but it can fill up quickly, especially during peak season. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot.

How challenging is this loop hike?

This loop is rated as difficult and is best suited for experienced hikers. It involves steep, rocky passages, some light scrambling, and a demanding descent with loose scree. Hikers should have very good fitness, be sure-footed, and have a good head for heights.

What kind of terrain can I expect on this route?

The terrain is varied and demanding. You'll encounter forest paths, wide tracks, and then narrower, rockier sections. Expect moderately exposed passages, some equipped with fixed cables, and even a few sets of stairs. The return via Forcella Marcoira includes steep, technical sections, scree slopes, and a challenging rubble-filled descent.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the trail?

The primary highlight is the stunning Lake Sorapis, famous for its milky turquoise color. You'll also pass the Alfonso Vandelli Hut. From Forcella Marcoira, you'll get panoramic views of the Val d'Ansiei, Lake Misurina, and distant peaks like Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Cadini di Misurina.

Is this trail suitable for families or beginners?

No, due to its difficult rating, exposed sections, and technical terrain, this loop is not recommended for families with young children or beginner hikers. It requires significant alpine experience and a high level of fitness.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The best time to hike this loop is typically from late June to early October, when the trails are generally free of snow and ice. Always check current weather and trail conditions before you go, as conditions can change rapidly in the Dolomites.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in this part of the Dolomites?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail in the Dolomites. However, it's always good practice to be aware of and respect local regulations, as the Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Dolomites, the difficult and exposed nature of this specific loop, including sections with fixed cables and steep scree, might make it challenging or unsafe for some dogs. Consider your dog's agility and experience before bringing them on this particular route.

Does this loop intersect with other well-known trails?

Yes, this route covers significant sections of the Alta via n. 3 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 3. It also briefly intersects with parts of the Alta via n. 4 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 4, Cammino delle Dolomiti - Tappa 15, and Alta via n. 9 delle Dolomiti - Dolomiten-Höhenweg Nr. 9.

Is there a place to rest or get refreshments along the way?

Yes, the Alfonso Vandelli Hut (Rifugio Vandelli) is located near Lake Sorapis, offering a great spot to rest and refuel during your hike.

What should I pack for this hike?

Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, pack sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, layers of clothing suitable for changing mountain weather, rain gear, plenty of water, snacks, a map, compass or GPS, and a first-aid kit. Hiking poles can be very helpful, especially on the steep descents.

September 5, 2021: A sporty walk with first a big climb (sometimes really steep) and then a steep descent to get to the lake.

This tour offers everything a mountaineer's heart desires: breathtaking views, including a spectacular glimpse of the Three Peaks! However, the trail requires absolute surefootedness and a head for heights, as some sections are quite exposed. You'll be rewarded with a beautifully situated, deep-blue mountain lake—a true highlight of the tour. An absolute must for experienced hikers! 🏞☀️

Starting from Passo delle Tre Croci on path 215 after a few fairly easy km we climbed towards Lake Sorapis on a difficult and challenging route with some passages with sloping rocks, paths on precipices, but the view of the lake is priceless. On the way back we passed by the Maicona fork on path 216 very impervious, tiring both uphill and downhill to return from the path that arrives behind the Hotel where the Tre Croci are. We do not recommend starting from there and doing it the other way around.

Good physical condition is required. The sections at -40% are steep and slippery. The scree slope was almost impassable due to the recent snowmelt.

We already knew that @⛰️Sascha🚴🏼 and I wouldn't be alone at Lago di Sorapis 😄...but we certainly didn't expect such a crowd 🙄....simply awful 😱, on every stone rising from the truly beautiful turquoise lake sat a "mermaid," twisting her head left or right at her friend's command...🫩😵‍💫...after a quick 5 minutes of splashing around with the dogs, we moved on 🤣😅....the rest of the tour was still a pleasant experience, the panorama is simply a dream 🤩😍 and, surprisingly, we ended up being almost alone 👆🏻. PS: The real heroes today were on the 🏔 Punta Sorapiss 3205m 👆🏻😉@Flo @Barkus ...we're excited about your tour 🤩

Ascent by the classic route, not very technical but very very touristy. Lake Sorapis is worth the detour, very very pretty. The return was made by an alternative route allowing to make a loop. The climb is steep but not too technical, a handrail is present to secure certain passages. On the descent, a short steep and technical passage in a scree but the rest of the course is not very technical.

Beautiful ring that offers breathtaking views along the way to and from the lake.
