Hiking

The Pen y Fan Horseshoe Ridge offers a challenging and rewarding hike through Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. This classic circular route covers 11.5 miles (18.5 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2370 feet (722 metres), typically taking around 5 hours and 55 minutes to complete. You will traverse well-worn mountain trails, rocky sections, and grassy ridges, encountering numerous steep ascents and descents, including pitched stone staircases. From the summits of Corn Du, Pen y Fan, and Cribyn, you can enjoy magnificent 360-degree views across the Brecon Beacons and towards the Neuadd Reservoirs below.

Rated as difficult, this route demands good fitness and sturdy footwear. The trail can be a mixture of mud, rock, and stony paths, with some sections becoming boggy, especially in winter. The ridge sections are exposed, so be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather and potential wind. Starting your hike early is often recommended to secure parking and experience quieter sections of this popular trail.

This route is celebrated as one of the best ridge walks in southern Britain, forming a distinctive U-shape around the Taf Fechan glacial valley. It includes Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales, along with Corn Du and Cribyn, all featuring Bronze Age burial cairns. The challenging conditions and varied terrain also make it a famous training ground, notably used by UK Special Forces for their selection process.

Fan y Bîg Summit and Diving Board

Highlight • Summit

The Diving Board on Fan y Big is one of the most photographed locations in the Brecon Beacons. The views over towards Cribyn and Pen Y Fan are super good, as are the views down towards the Gap. It is great to come up here on a winter weekday, when it is a bit quieter too. It is also a very popular spot for your sunrise and sunset shots. It is easier than it looks to get here, and it doesn't matter which way you come up; the effort is absolutely well worth it.

Cribyn Summit

Highlight • Summit

At 2,608 feet (795 m), the summit of Cribyn boasts bold and dramatic views over Pen-y-Fan, looking towards the steep cliff that forms its eastern flank. When the weather is clear, the views to the north are especially impressive too, towards Mynydd Epynt, Brecon and the Cambrian mountains beyond.

Classic route to the top of Pen Y Fan and a great thigh burner. Made infamous by the SAS as part of their Fan Dance event. It's a great place to work out and get some of the best views in the central range of the Brecon Beacons at the same time.

Pen y Fan

Highlight • Summit

Chief of the Brecon Beacons and the highest summit in south Wales, Pen y Fan is a hugely popular peak with routes to the top to suit everyone from first time day-trippers to potential SAS commandos. Red sandstone creates its unmistakable layered profile and gives hue to the Bronze Age cairn that tops the summit.

Corn Du summit

Highlight • Summit

Corn Du is rarely climbed alone, but as a peak added to an expedition to Pen y Fan. The climb up is a great one though and the views from the top are absolutely spectacular.

On clear days, you can see all the way to the Severn Bridge and beyond, as well as much of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Be careful in bad weather conditions: visibility can shrink to zero on one of the regular foggy days and strong winds will try and blow your sandwiches away!

Rhiw yr Ysgyfarnog Escarpment

Highlight • Natural Monument

Easier to walk it than it is to say, the Rhiw yr Ysgyfarnog escarpment is an arrow-straight ridge that takes hikers from the high points of the Central Beacons towards the Neuadd Reservoirs and Taf Fechan Forest.

Few paths in Britain's mountains are this straight for so long and the easy gradient only adds to this sense. It seems to go on and on and on. However, the views to the west, down into Cwm Crew and beyond to the Black Mountain are superb.

August 9, 2024,The classic four peaks in Brecon Beacons
Phenomenally beautiful walk in the heart of the Brecon Beacons: the classic 4-peaks walk. Over the Corn Du, Pen y Fan, Crybin and Fan y Big. The route runs over at least 4 more peaks, but they seem to be less important in this story and apparently count for less 😏. The walk is also called the horseshoe walk. The …

An iconic walk to the highest point in South Wales. This was an extended version of the classic Brecon Beacons Horseshoe, as I started and finished at the Parkwood Outdoors Dolygaer campsite (which I can definitely recommend as a place to stay!) A lovely forest walk above a mountain railway line was followed by some off-path ascent through rough fields …
