You start in the middle of Ulmen. After a short time you will leave the historic town behind you and immerse yourself in the nature around Ulmen. The path first leads you through a forest to the idyllic Eifel town of Meiserich. Then the original valley of the Üssbach welcomes you. You will pass two former mills: the corn mill and the Auderather mill are right on the path. The secluded surroundings of the Nollenbach between the two mills will captivate you with its peace and untouched nature. Back in Ulmen, you can't miss a visit to the Maar tunnel.

A nice tour that you can extend via the Kleine Ulmener Acht HeimatSpur.

✨ Highlights of the tour:
⇨ 6.6 km corn mill
⇨ 12.3 km Ulmen Castle
⇨ 12.5 km Ulmener Maar
⇨ 13.1 km Ulmen Maar tunnels
⇨ 13.6 km Jungferweiher

Highlight • Structure

The corn mill has an eventful history. It was first mentioned in 1810/11 in the map by the French engineer and geographer Tranchot. In 1817 it was referred to as a full mill, a mill in which fabrics and leather were further processed.
The corn mill, which was named after its owners, actually consisted of two mill buildings, so it was not small. The mill mentioned above stood on the side facing the Ueßbach and was demolished in 1980 because it was dilapidated. The building, including the barn and bakery on the other side, burned down in 1943 and the charred and uninhabited building gradually fell into disrepair until it was bought by private hands in 1984 and rebuilt.

The tunnel has only been open since 2023 and connects the Ulmener Maar with the Jungferweiher Maar. It is 120 meters long and 70 cm wide at its narrowest point. Good display boards with explanations of the various rock layers of volcanic history are clearly visible.
The tunnel was used to channel water from the two maars into the Ulmener …

Today's tour was the big round of the "HeimatSpur Ulmener Acht", which we hiked in the opposite direction. In addition, we have modified the tour somewhat in order to cross the Eifel highlight, the Ulmener Maar tunnel, which opened on April 24th, 2023.
The starting point can be reached by public transport.

The hike begins well signposted with the corresponding logo on the old railway line.
First I go around a piece of it because I think the old tracks are great.
What was it like when trains were still running?
Then it follows the logo, I follow the tour, cross the street, come through a residential area and then arrive in …

Today a nice relaxed hike in great weather. 🌞😃

My hike today takes me from Ulmen to Meiserich first. 🗺️

Behind the village, the kilometer-long Ueßbachtal begins.

The wind rustles the trees 🌲💨, so that the sounds of the nearby motorway soon fade away. In general, I am moving further and further away from the A48 here, and nature soon dominates the scenery and the sound 🦅🌿
