Mountain biking

Embark on a challenging mountain biking adventure through the Penmachno MTB trails, a hidden gem nestled high in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. This route offers 17.8 miles (28.6 km) of purpose-built singletrack and forest trails, featuring a mix of fast descents, technical sections, and demanding climbs. You will gain 1944 feet (593 metres) in elevation, passing through ancient woodlands, alongside cascading waterfalls, and enjoying panoramic views across lush valleys and crystal-clear streams. Expect a ride that takes around 2 hours and 52 minutes to complete, graded as moderate but best suited for experienced riders due to its technical nature.

When planning your visit, be aware that the trails are remote, offering a tranquil experience away from crowded biking hubs. The entire 17.8-mile (28.6 km) route can be ridden as one continuous loop, or you can choose to tackle the individual Dolen Machno (19 km) or Dolen Eryri (11 km) loops. Parking is typically available at the trailhead, but always check local information for any specific access details or requirements before you go. The natural setting means you should be prepared for varying weather conditions typical of a national park.

What truly sets the Penmachno trails apart is their raw, natural charm and the community effort behind them. Managed and maintained by Menter Bro Machno, a local group, the trails are funded by rider donations, fostering a sustainable approach to their upkeep. This commitment ensures a unique and authentic mountain biking experience, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of Snowdonia without distractions. It is a place where the focus remains purely on the ride and the stunning natural environment.

Forest Trail in Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri

Highlight • Trail

Classic Welsh trail centre riding, with some gorgeous mossy green scenes as you wind through the trees. A little rocky, plenty of pedalling and lots of corners.

This might not be the adrenaline rush you're hoping for (more of that to come later), but very good to get your eye in and test your bike skills. An XC riders' paradise!

Ffastis Un, Du and Tri Singletrack Descents

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Three singletrack descent segments that are a total blast! This is what all the climbing was in aid of.

Narrow slithers of rock and slate with a few rock drops, plentiful corners and mega views down over the valley. Yee-haw!

Dal Ali Singletrack

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

With so many streams crossing the mountain bike trail here at the head of the valley, it's no surprise that there's always a lot of standing water (and flowing water) on the rocky trail here. Waterproof socks would have been a good idea - even in July!

The water does add another layer of fun to navigating this nadgery section though, heading wheel-first into puddles of unknown depths!

Cwm Penmachno Singletrack Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Absolutely fantastic singletrack section overlooking Cwm Penmachno as you fly down the hillside. A few rollers and small features, it's a really fast section with big, open views and somewhat reminiscent of some Afan descents to the south. Enjoy!

Trail Reviews

Martin Davidson
August 25, 2025, Penmachno MTB ride ride with extreme caution . The closet thing to Middle Earth unfortunately Suaron seems to be winning the battle!

The carpark is very limited & only open below the barrier at the entrance to the forest. Payment is voluntary via the Penmachno on line page or with cash into the 'glory hole' @money box. The trail is run & maintained by local volunteers (unfortunately I fear they may have long gone). Hot food & good coffee is available 7 days a week at the Conwy Falls Cafe at the Junction with the main A5 road in & out of the village.
