A particularly beautiful tour to discover Monte Amiata in the summer version. It starts from Abbadia San Salvatore where it is possible to leave the car in a free public car park near the beautiful Benedictine abbey which for centuries has hosted pilgrims who traveled along the Via Francigena. You immediately face the climb that from the village rises to the summit at an altitude of 1670m. A little more than 12 km long climb, almost entirely in the shade, with almost always pedalable slopes, with an overall height difference of 800m and an average gradient of 6.6%. For those who want to try their hand at hill climbing this is the STRAVA segment: https://www.strava.com/segments/34885809. Once at the top, it is possible to refresh oneself in one of the numerous bars present. Retrace the last uphill section downhill to the crossroads and take a right towards Prato della Contessa and then a right towards Le Macinaie. Here is the headquarters of Amiate Freeride, the famous MTB school from where you can take the ski lifts that allow bikers to try their hand at the numerous trails immersed in the woods. Also at Le Macinaie there are many places for a short break. Take the road that takes you back to Prato della Contessa and take the descent towards Arcidosso but, at the first hairpin bend, turn left towards Santa Fiora and Bagnolo and then, at the fork, left again towards Piancastagnaio. This stretch of road is really very beautiful, shaded and on asphalt in good condition. Arrived at the crossroads at the bottom of the descent, we recommend a short detour towards the village of Piancastagnaio, characterized by the imposing Rocca Aldobrandesca (recently restored). The last stretch in the direction of Abbadia San Salvatore is undulating and easy to pedal, even if, unlike the rest of the route, it is a bit busy. Once in the village, a visit to the ancient village is recommended, characterized by narrow alleys, to then conclude the tour with a visit to the Benedictine abbey.
From the chestnut woods of Piancastagnaio to the beech forest of the Amiata peak. For those who love cycling in the shade!
