North Shore Trail, Loch Lyon

Highlight • Trail

This doubletrack trail along the northern shores of Loch Lyon is a real treat, you just need to look at the photos to see that!

The way is mostly rideable on a gravel bike or mountain bike and is pretty flat, so you can take your time to admire the incredible views down the valley with the blue water surrounded by great rising shapes of the hillsides.

Loch Lyon to Bridge of Orchy Mountain Pass

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Rocky but beautiful mountain pass connecting Loch Lyon (and later Glen Lyon) to the Bridge of Orchy valley, where you can leave or enter the West Highland Way leading bypass the beautiful Glencoe.

The road is certainly passable for mountain bikes and touring bikes with wider tires. Beware of some small creeks to pass and the occasional loose rocks. Start or finish of the road by riding towards the old railway bridge.

Start of the Highland Trail 550

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Heading north out of Tyndrum, this trail is the start of the Highland Trail 550 route.

From the outset you'll get a taste of what's in store, with this technically challenging trail meaning that you're likely to be pushing, rather than riding your bike.

Take your time to enjoy the incredible views across the Glen as you cross the border out of the Loch Lomond National Park and toward the Grampians.

This lochan (small body of water) is famous for supposedly being the resting place for a number of ancient Scottish swords, cast aside to facilitate an escape from battle.

It's said that a battle between Robert the Bruce and the Clan McDougall led to Robert the Bruce's man being forced to flee. As they passed this wee lochan, Robert called for them to cast their heavy weapons into the lochan.

Alongside the smaller swords of his men, Robert the Bruces meter-long claymore is thought to be resting at the bottom of this pond, guarded by the lady of the loch.

Kirk Craig Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

This section of the West Highland Way long distance walking route also makes for some great mountain biking, with a doubletrack trail leading up Kirk Craig from the north. Expect some spectacular views from here, too, as the track winds in and out of the forest.
