Hiking
Embark on the challenging Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger Paths Loop, a difficult hiking route that spans 11.0 miles (17.8 km) through Snowdonia National Park. You will ascend a significant 3493 feet (1064 metres) in elevation, offering a rewarding workout with continuous mountain vistas. Expect to spend around 6 hours and 27 minutes completing this demanding circuit, where the rugged terrain and expansive views define the experience.
Before you set out, be aware that this is a strenuous hike requiring good fitness and navigational skills. The Rhyd Ddu Path, in particular, features rocky, very steep sections and an exposed, narrow ridge over Bwlch Main, so a good head for heights is essential. Parking is conveniently available at the Rhyd Ddu car park, which also provides facilities like toilets and a nearby pub for post-hike refreshments. Plan to start early to allow ample time for completion.
This loop offers a distinct perspective of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) compared to its more frequented ascents, providing a sense of solitude. As you climb the Rhyd Ddu Path, you will be treated to striking views towards Moel Hebog and the Nantlle Ridge. The Llechog ridge further enhances the experience with expansive vistas across Cwm Clogwyn, leading to the panoramic views from Snowdon Summit itself before your descent on the Snowdon Ranger Path.

The Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger Paths Loop is a challenging hike that generally takes around 6 to 7 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views. The total distance is approximately 17.8 km (11 miles).
No, this loop is classified as difficult and strenuous. It requires a good level of fitness, experience with hill-walking, and navigational skills. The Rhyd Ddu Path, in particular, involves rocky, very steep terrain and an exposed, narrow ridge over Bwlch Main, which demands a good head for heights. It is not recommended for beginners.
Parking is available at the Rhyd Ddu car park. This car park also offers facilities such as toilets and has a pub nearby.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails in Snowdonia National Park, including this loop. However, it's crucial to keep dogs on a lead, especially due to livestock grazing and the exposed sections of the path. Be aware that some parts of the trail, particularly the rocky and exposed ridges, might be challenging for some dogs.
The best time to hike this loop is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to October) when the weather is generally more stable and daylight hours are longer. During winter, specialist equipment is essential due to snow, ice, and rapidly changing conditions.
No, you do not need a permit or to pay an entrance fee to access the trails within Snowdonia National Park, including the Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger Paths Loop. However, parking at official car parks like Rhyd Ddu will incur a fee.
The terrain is varied and challenging. You'll encounter well-surfaced gravel paths initially, but quickly transition to rough, rocky ground. Expect boggy sections, especially on the middle part of the Rhyd Ddu Path. The Llechog Summit ridge and the South Ridge/Bwlch Main section are particularly exposed and narrow with steep drops, requiring careful footing.
This loop offers spectacular mountain scenery. You'll enjoy views towards Moel Hebog, the Nantlle Ridge, and Mynydd Mawr from the Rhyd Ddu side. The Llechog Summit provides views across Cwm Clogwyn, and the summit of Snowdon Summit (Yr Wyddfa) offers panoramic vistas of the entire Snowdon Massif. The Snowdon Ranger Path also provides grandstand views over many of Snowdonia's high peaks.
The Rhyd Ddu and Snowdon Ranger Paths are generally less frequented than the more popular Llanberis or Pen-y-Pass routes. This loop offers a quieter experience and a greater sense of solitude, especially on the lower and middle sections, until you approach the summit area where all paths converge.
Yes, this loop incorporates significant sections of the official Snowdon Ranger Path and Rhyd Ddu Path. It also briefly intersects with parts of the Cambrian Way, Llanberis Path, Welsh Three Thousands, and Watkin Path near the summit.
Yes, the Rhyd Ddu car park, which is a common starting point for this loop, has public toilets. There is also a pub located nearby in the village of Rhyd Ddu, offering a place for refreshments after your hike.
A circular route that starts and finishes at the Rhyd Ddu Carpark. Crossing from Rangers to Rhyd Ddu at the end is always somewhat boggy and after heavy rain could be very boggy. Heading through an old slate quarry does add a little bit of a history to this long south western route. A lovely alternative loop that takes you on one of the quietest paths Snowdon has to offer for the return. Best saved for some drier days and not ideal after lots of rain
A lovely snowy hike up to Mt Snowdon. We too the Rydh Ddu path up and came back along the Rangers. A great route and much quiter that the other paths ive taken to the summit in the past.
Ranger - Rhyd Ddu loop on western faces of Yr Wyddfa, the side less travelled. An early start to beat the crowds. Sunrise on snowdon 🌞😎
