Ben Ledi and Stank Glen loop — Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park

Mountain biking

The Ben Ledi and Stank Glen loop offers a challenging mountain biking experience in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. You will navigate a mix of gravel forest roads, compact dirt paths, and technical singletrack, especially on the eastern side of Ben Ledi. This difficult route covers 20.3 miles (32.7 km) with a significant elevation gain of 3696 feet (1126 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 38 minutes to complete.

Prepare for rugged, steep sections that may require you to push your bike, particularly when ascending Ben Ledi. The descent from Ben Ledi can be quite technical, featuring rooty, steppy, and chunky ground that demands advanced bike handling skills. Be aware that surfaces can become muddy after rain, adding to the challenge, and trails are often shared with walkers, so ride respectfully.

This loop stands out for its blend of demanding mountain biking and iconic Scottish scenery. You will pass through forested glens, see picturesque waterfalls on the Stank Burn, and enjoy expansive views over Loch Lubnaig. The journey to the shoulder of Ben Ledi, the highest peak in the Trossachs, rewards you with panoramic vistas across the Central Belt and into the Southern Highlands, making it a truly notable ride.

Glen Finglas Estate Singletrack (North Shore of Loch Venachar)

Highlight • Cycleway

This trail is a pure joy to ride. A lot of the climbs can be scaled using your momentum from the inbound descent, with a bit of legwork to get you to the top of the higher ones. Love the pace of this track.

Meall Loop, Glen Finglas

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A good, well surfaced path that marks an excellent way to start the climb up the Glen Finglas – that crucially isn't a road.

Lochan nan Corp

Highlight • Natural

Legend tells of a clan (possibly the McKinleys, who were related to the MacDonalds of Keppoch) who were forced to move to Glenfingas after they angered a spirit who dried up the well in their homeland.

One day, they were travelling in a funeral procession (traditionally performed on foot) from Glenfingas to the churchyard of St Bride, during a winter storm. They took a shortcut across the frozen Loch, and one deeper part hadn't frozen (or an evil creature appeared) and they all (200 souls) died on one go. Since then, the Loch has been called the Lochan nan Corp - 'the little loch of the dead'.

If you're up there in the mist, and you see a funeral party, get out of the way, otherwise you'll be under a spell to follow them forever!

Actually, it's quite small and quite shallow (waist height, tops) - and it's so called as the trail is an old coffin road called the pass of the dead (Bealach nan Corp). But that's not quite as much fun!

Ben Ledi Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Ben Ledi is one of the Trossach's most popular peaks. The mountain is well known for Walter Scott's Lady of the Lake poem, one of the many products of the Romantic era. Its summit stands proud above the Highland Fault Line and gives excellent views towards the Central Belt, the Ochils and the Campsie Fells, as well as north into the heart of the Southern Highlands.

Descent from Ben Ledi

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This trail has been extensively 'maintained' so that erosion from the many walkers is kept to a minimum. So climbing it is a nightmare of pushing up steps. However, descending it can be a lot of fun, if you keep your wits about you!

The beauty, relatively small size (relatively) and proximity to Callander of Ben Ledi makes this a popular route for walkers too - but on the whole they're a polite bunch if you're friendly and give way to them.

Stank Glen Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

That trail that runs alongside Stank Glen is an absolute delight – provided, that is, you find rooty, steppy and above all steep trails delightful. Every time you come across a trail problem, it reveals itself to be solvable in a highly satisfying way, and you emerge at the bottom thrilled that you've managed something so technical sight unseen.

If that really doesn't sound like your cup of tea though, the fire-road switchbacks down the hill are also an exhilarating blast.
