Mountain biking

Embark on a moderate mountain biking adventure through the picturesque Tuscan landscape with the Abbazia di San Galgano ed Eremo di Montesiepi — Giro ad anello. This 24.9-mile (40.1 km) loop takes you through ancient forests, green hills, vineyards, and olive groves, especially in the Val di Merse. You will encounter varied terrain, including unpaved roads, asphalt, natural paths, paved sections, and dirt roads, with a total elevation gain of 2274 feet (693 metres) over approximately 3 hours and 21 minutes of riding. The highlight is the majestic, roofless 13th-century Abbazia di San Galgano, a truly evocative sight that fills the eyes and heart with wonderful images.

This route is considered moderately difficult, requiring good fitness and advanced riding skills for some sections. Be prepared for varied surfaces and technical challenges, as some parts may even require you to push your bike. If you choose to ride it clockwise, you might find managing the steep downhill sections a bit easier. The area around Chiusdino is known for its challenging climbs and descents, so plan your ride accordingly and ensure your mountain bike is suitable for such conditions.

Beyond the physical challenge, this trail offers a deep dive into history and legend. A short, intense climb connects the abbey to the Eremo di Montesiepi, an older, circular chapel. Inside, you will find the legendary 'sword in the stone,' believed to have been placed there by Saint Galgano himself, adding a mysterious Arthurian touch to your ride. The Eremo also features a distinctive dome with concentric white and red rings and frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, making it a truly special destination within the Siena hills.

Highlight • Religious Site

To see at least as much as the ruins of the church of San Galgano. The chapel is a little off the beaten track and freely accessible. Inside is a simple but beautiful dome and a mosaic ceiling in an adjoining room.

September 24, 2022, San Galgano da S.Rocco a Pilli

Rather simple tour starting from San Rocco a Pilli to get to San Galgano passing through Stigliano, Monticiano, San Galgano, Pentolina, Torri. The only point to report is after having seen the Castle of Spannocchia you totna back a hundred meters to take a rather steep and stony uphill road in the first 50 meters then it becomes easier but always to be done carefully because they have cut the wood and the road is quite dirty with branches.

Be careful on the path that leads from Monticiano to San Galgano. Bridge unusable, in case you have to ford the river on foot!

A great tour in terms of scenery! But as a Komoot user, I should really cancel. PRETTY MUCH EVERYTHING WAS WRONG! I had to keep turning back. There's no path at all! I slightly injured myself at a turnaround point. They should really demand a refund...
