Hiking

The sandy forest and heath area between Nordlohne and Schepsdorf, which was formerly used as a military site, is home to the Bentheim sheep. This particular breed of sheep is threatened with extinction. In addition, an interesting nature trail runs through the heath with stations for young and old.

The hike begins at the Heimathaus on the outskirts of Lohne. Along roads and on forest paths it goes to Nordlohne, where you meet the already mentioned heath area. Climb towers, test your knowledge at quiz stations and keep an eye out for the Bentheim sheep. Various rest areas invite you to take a break in the shade of old pines.

Passing the fascinating sand dunes you hike back into the forest. The tour then takes you on flat paths to the center of Lohne. There you will find a few places to stop before you walk back to the starting point.

The Waldbauer is located in the beautiful Bentheim Forest and is easy to reach by car, bicycle or on foot. As a hiker or cyclist you can start from Schüttorf or Bad Bentheim and experience the natural forest from its most beautiful side. In the restaurant there is everything your heart desires, from coffee to cake, a delicious draft beer and various good dishes. Very nice, of course, in the warm season, outside on the terrace under large old trees. Next door the cows graze and there is an enclosure with deer.

Vechte Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The view is also called Europabrücke from the Vechtebrücke SÜD, over the landscape here in Schüttorf. This bridge is also part of the "Töddenweg", which was long ago a main hiking trail in the direction of Deventer to Holland. This trade route was safer for the Kiepenträger (Tödden), who came from the Osnabrück area than the former traffic routes. Coming from Osnabrück the path leads via Rheine to Schüttorf, then via Suddendorf over the beautiful Bentheimer mountains to the castle in Bentheim. Then continue through Gildehaus to Holland and on to Deventer.
Particularly noteworthy is the hiking trail (possibly also mountain bike) over the Bentheimer mountains. A highlite!

A varied route with elegant houses and impressive scenery. Even in winter. Remember to wear sturdy shoes.
