Hiking

Embark on a challenging hike along the Kent coastline with the Folkestone to Dover loop on the Saxon Shore Way. This difficult 17.6-mile (28.3 km) route, taking around 7 hours and 44 minutes to complete, features a significant 1432 feet (436 metres) of elevation gain. You will experience dramatic clifftop views across the English Channel, with France visible on clear days, and pass the iconic White Cliffs of Dover. The terrain is varied, including dirt tracks, steps, and paved sections, with some steep ascents and descents, particularly near Folkestone and Dover. Expect narrow paths that can be overgrown, and be prepared for windy conditions along the exposed cliff tops where shade is limited.

While the trail is generally well-maintained, its length and elevation make it a demanding day out, so plan to start early to allow ample time. The route can be windy, especially on the clifftops, so check the weather forecast and dress in layers. There are sections that can be overgrown with blackberry bushes and nettles, so long trousers might be a good idea. As much of the route lacks shade, bring plenty of water and sun protection, especially during warmer months.

This section of the Saxon Shore Way is rich in history, tracing ancient Roman coastlines and featuring defensive structures from various periods. You will encounter Martello Towers, 19th-century coastal forts built against Napoleonic invasions, and pass the Battle of Britain War Memorial. The trail also offers views of the Abbots Cliff Sound Mirror, an early acoustic mirror, and the vast defenses of Western Heights. You will also walk past Shakespeare Cliff, famously referenced in *King Lear*, and through unique areas like Samphire Hoe Country Park, created from Channel Tunnel excavations.

Entrance to Drop Redoubt, Western Heights

Highlight • Historical Site

Drop Redoubt fort is linked to the citadel via dry moats. You can look round the exterior of the fort for free at any time during daylight. The fort is located on a cliff with a steep drop into the sea but was actually built to defend attackers from inland who had invaded from the other side of Dover.
Drop Redoubt is in the care of English Heritage with occasional guided tours available. See their website for more details english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/western-heights-dover

Shakespeare Cliff

Highlight • Viewpoint

The first attempt to dig a tunnel under the Channel to connect England and France was commenced here at Shakespeare Cliff in the late 1870s. The sea is its narrowest here at just 21 miles.
It has earned its name, Shakespeare Cliff, from being associated with King Lear. There are great views up here along the coastline and even across to France.

White Cliffs of Dover

Highlight • Natural Monument

The White Cliffs of Dover are an iconic British landmark. As this is the narrowest sea crossing to mainland Europe, the white cliffs were once the first sighting of home that you would have when returning from abroad.
During World War Two, Dame Vere Lyn's song "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover" brought the landscape even closer to the nation's hearts. She led a campaign to save the clifftops from development before her death in 2017.

This beautiful stretch of coastline was created by excavating chalk rock during the construction of the Euro Tunnel.
Today you can go for a walk, swim on the pebble beach or fish from the fortified wall.

Folkestone Harbour

Highlight • Structure

Folkestone Harbour has experienced a time of great regeneration since 2014. Now a place to promenade, enjoy a cafe or take in the view, it was a busy ferry port until 2001.
The harbour was an important part of World War Two as it was here that 44000 people passed through during the evacuations of Dunkirk.
