This moderate hike, known as the Landscapes around Greve in Chianti – Ring tour, takes you on a 5.3-mile (8.6 km) journey with an elevation gain of 847 feet (258 metres), typically completed in about 2 hours and 32 minutes. You will traverse rolling hills, expansive vineyards, and ancient olive groves, with picturesque views of the Greve valley and the fortified medieval village of Montefioralle. The trail mixes dirt paths, gravel roads, and quiet cypress-shaded lanes, offering a true taste of the Tuscan countryside.

Starting and ending in the charming town of Greve in Chianti, the route is conveniently accessible, with parking available near the trailhead. While considered moderate, it is suitable for most skill levels and requires good fitness, making it a rewarding option for families and occasional hikers looking for a scenic outing in the Chianti region.

A highlight of this route is the opportunity to explore Montefioralle, a well-preserved medieval village featuring ancient stone houses and narrow streets, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The trail fully immerses you in the quintessential Chianti environment, famous for its harmonious blend of nature and cultivation. Greve in Chianti itself, often called the “gateway” to the region, provides a vibrant cultural experience with its triangular Piazza Matteotti, artisan shops, and restaurants.

Montefioralle Castle

Highlight • Castle

Montefioralle is a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Greve in Chianti, in Tuscany. It' situated on a hill, in a territory halfway between Florence and Siena, and, just for this, much disputed in the Middle Ages by the two Republics.
The village presents a medieval urban structure and preserves ancient stone houses, part of the castle and most of the walls with three gates.
It's not sure that it can be the birthplace of Amerigo Vespucci, as someone claims; but indeed the noble Vespucci family owned a palace in this village.

What a lovely little town...and with so much history of wine. But Greve is also known for its excellent game meat and butcher shops. Unfortunately there aren't many left and if you're in Greve you have to go to Macelleria Falorni...an experience. There are many products related to wild boar, but also cheese, wine, vinegar and spices... this butcher's shop is worth a visit.

Trail Reviews

Steffen Wekeck
May 30, 2025, Runde um Greve in Chianti

A short hike from Greve through the local vineyards and to the old Montefioralle fortress. Greve is pleasant, but busy and not as secluded as other villages. A narrow, pleasantly shady hiking trail leads directly from the center uphill. Later, you continue on a wider gravel path, offering repeated beautiful views of the valley and the Montefioralle fortress. You reach this fortress halfway through the tour – very quaint and still very deserted in the morning. (Unfortunately, so deserted that there wasn't even a bar.) After a somewhat tedious stretch along the road, you finally descend gently back through vineyards, past the currently closed church of San Cresci and various works of art that are part of the "Slow Road." Conclusion: Varied and with many postcard-like views of the landscape. Montefioralle is the highlight.

Second hike of the day, 40 minutes by car from the first. Very pretty loop, very windy but sunny. Beautiful views, pretty villages, Tuscany is definitely beautiful.
