Highlight • Natural Monument

Gummer's How is situated on the eastern shore of Windermere, near its southern end. While the hill is small by Lakeland standards, it affords magnificent views over Windermere, across to the Coniston fells and Morecambe Bay.

Highlight • Viewpoint

The wooded fellsides to the east of Windermere are a lovely place for a stroll. Burrow Beck chortles alongside the main path here, descending from its source on the high ground between Gummer's How and Birch Fell. Once out of the woods, there are plenty of excellent viewpoints for the fells of the South Lakes, such as from the ever-popular Gummer's How.

We didn't have to wait for sunshine, so we set off during a break in the rain. It was quite windy at the summit. Very beautiful view. Gnarled trees shaped by the wind. The rain had turned the paths into small streams. It was a constant up and down through the idyllic forest. Finally, we walked the remaining stretch to …
