Coniston Water

Highlight • Viewpoint

Coniston Water is the third largest lake in the Lake District by volume, and the fifth largest by area. It's about 5 miles (8 km) long by 2,625 ft (800 m) wide with a maximum depth of 184 ft (56 m). It sits in a deep U-shaped glacial valley.
Coniston is also steeped in human history from the Bronze Age settlement sites, the Roman copper mines and as a source of fish for the Monks in Furness Abbey. More recently, it inspired the setting for Arthur Ransome's Swallows and Amazons series. Coniston was also the site for several world record water speed attempts in the 20th century. In 1939 Sir Malcolm Campbell managed 141.74 mph (228.1 kmph). Between 1956 and 1959 his son Donald Campbell set four faster records. Tragically in 1967 Donald was killed shortly after pushing the record to 320 mph (515 kmph).
As a runner the lakeside trails are amazing, especially on the western shore.
