The trail largely traverses wild and exposed upland moorland and open valleys. You can expect varied surfaces, including grassy paths, some tarmac service roads around the reservoirs, and indistinct tracks. Be prepared for potentially very wet and boggy conditions underfoot, even in summer, making sturdy, waterproof hiking boots essential.
This is considered a moderate hike, requiring good fitness. While some sections are relatively easy, the uneven and often boggy terrain, combined with an initial uphill section to around 455 meters above sea level, necessitates sure-footedness. Navigation can also be challenging in places due to indistinct paths.
The primary attraction is the collection of beautiful lakes known as the Teifi Pools, including Llyn Teifi (the source of the River Teifi), Llyn Egnant, and Llyn Hir. The remote location offers expansive views over the Cambrian Mountains and the River Teifi Valley, often described as a 'mini Lake District' on clear days. The area is also a Dark Sky Discovery Site, offering exceptional stargazing.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through open moorland where livestock may be present, it's crucial to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a lead, to protect both your pet and local wildlife/farm animals.
The trail can be hiked year-round, but the best time is typically from late spring to early autumn (May to September) when the weather is generally milder and daylight hours are longer. Even then, be prepared for potentially wet and boggy conditions. Winter hikes are possible but require experience, appropriate gear, and awareness of shorter days and harsher weather.
Parking is typically available near the starting point of the trail, often approached from the vicinity of Strata Florida Abbey Ruins. Specific parking areas may be limited, so it's advisable to check local information or maps for designated spots before your visit.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Teifi Pools Circular Trail or to access the surrounding Cambrian Mountains. The area is open access, but please respect the natural environment and follow the Countryside Code.
Yes, the route incorporates significant sections of other established trails. Approximately 65% of the route follows the Cambrian Way, and about 12% aligns with the Trans Cambrian Way. Additionally, various sections are part of the broader Teifi Pools Walk network.
The remote moorland environment is home to various wildlife. Keep an eye out for birds of prey such as buzzards and red kites soaring overhead. The lakes are also known for wild brown trout. The area offers a profound sense of wilderness, making wildlife sightings a special part of the experience.
Given the exposed and often boggy terrain, essential items include sturdy, waterproof hiking boots (gaiters are highly recommended), waterproof and windproof layers, sufficient food and water, and a detailed map (such as an OS map) and compass or a reliable GPS device, as paths can be indistinct. Sun protection is also important on clear days.
The Teifi Pools area is very remote, offering a profound sense of wilderness with very few signs of human intrusion. There are no cafes, pubs, or public toilets directly on the trail. It's best to plan for self-sufficiency and carry everything you need. Facilities would be found in nearby villages or towns, such as those closer to Strata Florida Abbey.
For parking to start the walk Google directions to the Abbey,, if they tell you to turn up a single track with a pub on the corner DONT! it leads along a steep decline into a farm,, go past that and head into the village, turn left at the giveway and you will find signposts for the Abbey On the walk: where the line goes back on itself,, ignore it it, we wrongly crossed the stream! Keep walking with the stream on your right,,, it gets VERY boggy!
