Mountain biking

The Twrch Red Trail at Cwmcarn Trail Centre is a classic mountain biking route in South Wales, designed for proficient riders. You'll tackle 8.4 miles (13.5 km) of purpose-built singletrack, gaining 1197 feet (365 metres) in elevation over approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. This difficult-rated trail winds through diverse broadleaf and conifer woodlands, offering spectacular vistas. From sections like "Castle Valley," you can enjoy dramatic views down the valley towards Newport and even the Bristol Channel. Expect a varied surface with open, flowing sections mixed with tight, technical, and rooty terrain, including rocky parts, boardwalks, and berms.

The Twrch Red Trail is located at the Cwmcarn Trail Centre, serving as your starting point for this challenging ride. While the research doesn't detail specific parking or access points, you should plan your visit to the trail centre itself. The trail is known for being rideable in all weather conditions, making it a reliable option throughout the year. Allow yourself ample time to complete the route, as the estimated duration is around 1 hour and 30 minutes, but can extend up to 2.5 hours depending on your pace and stops.

Rated as difficult, the Twrch is ideal for experienced riders with good off-road skills and a strong fitness level. You'll encounter long, technical climbs, including the notoriously challenging "Giant's Finger" section, which demands significant effort. However, your hard work is rewarded with enjoyable, flowy descents and unique features like "Airtime 1," a series of rock drops leading into tight corners. The trail's blend of technical ascents and fun descents makes it a well-established and compelling mountain biking experience in the region.

Cwmcarn — Twrch Mountain Bike Trail

Highlight • Parking

Cwmcarn Forest in South Wales consists of two red graded singletrack trails and 2 DH tracks.
Both the singletrack trails contain lots of long technical climbs as well as some long flowy descents. Rocky in places and some incredible views from the top. Both trails are clearly signposted and easy to follow although do check they aren't closed for forestry works before going.

There is also loads of fire roads running throughout the woods which could be incorporated into a ride if the singletracks become too technical.

There is a bike shop, cafe and bike wash, plus pay and display car parking facilities at the bottom where all the trails join up.

Cwmcarn Trailhead Arch

Highlight • Rest Area

Look for the arch to start riding at Cwmcarn, which marks the start of the red-rated Twrch and Cafall trails. Here you'll also find trail maps and information for these two trails, as well as the two downhill trails, Y Mynydd and Pedalhounds, which are higher up the hill.

Pwca Trail Junction

Highlight • Trail

If you'd like to follow the blue-rated Pwca trail, this is the point where it peels off to the right, leaving the red-rated Cafall and Twrch trails. It's well signposted and you have to stop here to go through the stone wall circle, which also leads onto footpaths and a play area.

Airtime 1 on Twrch Trail

Highlight (Segment) • MTB Park

The main line on the red-level Twrch trail at Cwmcarn, this route starts with a series of three little rock drops before turning down a long series of channeled, tight corners.

Take care where the trail merges with Airtime 2, the alternative line, and enjoy the last banked berm.

To session this trail and try Airtime 2, turn right at the bottom to take the fireroad track and singletrack back to the top.

Odin Section on Twrch Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

You'll be surprised by how flowy an uphill segment can be through the woods here! It swoops up and down along through the woodland with a few rooty sections and an optional skinny to tackle too. The corners back down to the fire road here are a real blast after all the pedalling.

Castle Valley on Twrch Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

A fun ribbon of rocky single track contouring around the hillside of Medart with incredible views down the valley to Newport. There are no major features on this section which is just as well: the scenery is breathtaking enough.
