The Cime du Cheiron Loop typically starts from Gréolières village. You should be able to find parking within the village itself, which serves as the main access point for this route.
This loop is considered difficult. It involves a significant elevation gain of over 1000 meters and covers more than 21 kilometers. Hikers should be in excellent physical condition and prepared for a long, demanding day on the trail.
The terrain is predominantly rocky, especially during the ascent, with sections described as 'chemins de caillasses' (stony paths). You'll pass through forests initially, then reach the treeline and ascend along an exposed limestone ridge. Be mindful of moving rocks on the descent. Higher sections feature unique geological formations called 'lapiaz'.
The highlight is undoubtedly the Cheiron Summit (1778 m), which offers a magnificent 360° panorama. From here, you can see the Côte d'Azur, the Lérins Islands, and on clear days, even Corsica. Views also extend over the Loup Valley, Mercantour mountains, and various plateaus. You'll also encounter interesting 'lapiaz' rock formations and the ruins of Hautes Gréolières.
Spring and autumn are generally the best times for this hike, offering pleasant temperatures and clear views. During winter months (January to March), special attention to trail markings is needed, and vigilance is required on the upper ridge due to potential snow and ice on short, steep slopes.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, given the difficult and rocky terrain, the significant distance, and the presence of wildlife, ensure your dog is fit for such a demanding hike and keep them on a leash, especially in areas with chamois or vultures.
No, there are typically no entrance fees or permits required to hike the Cime du Cheiron Loop within the Parc naturel régional des Préalpes d'Azur. However, always respect local regulations regarding wildlife, litter, and fire prevention.
Keep an eye out for various wildlife, including birds of prey like Griffon Vultures, which are known to fly over the Préalpes d'Azur. You might also spot chamois and, less commonly, marmots in the higher alpine sections.
Yes, the route intersects with several other official trails. Notably, it covers significant sections of the Traversée de l'Estéron - Étape 2 and the Cime du Cheiron trail itself. You'll also find it briefly joins parts of the Traversée des Miroirs and Les Chemins du Soleil.
Gréolières village, where the loop typically starts, offers some basic amenities. You may find cafes, pubs, or accommodation options there, which can be a welcome sight after completing this challenging hike.
The Cime du Cheiron Loop from Gréolières is a long hike. Based on its distance of over 21 km and significant elevation gain, it typically takes around 7 to 7.5 hours to complete, not including breaks.
Great hike with a lovely group!! Well...we felt a bit like we were in Haute-Savoie in the middle of winter 🌫️🥶🤣...not a change of scenery, but they explained to me that in theory we have a magnificent view of the sea and the mountains??!!😅 I'll have to go back to be sure!!😉 Great despite everything 👌👍
Precaution to be taken with respect to the return: on the route, at the level of "Le PLUY" to the hiking trail. A real obstacle course; between the brambles, loss of internet connection (map) and practically invisible path. I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT!!! MUST MAKE THE DETOUR!!! unless you have a machete :) Otherwise great hike! Magnificent view!
