This route was planned by komoot.
Komoot rates this route as easy, covering 7.16 km with about 87m of elevation gain. However, some sections, especially closer to the Cascada de los Bolos, involve navigating large boulders and walking through water. Good physical condition and sure-footedness are recommended, making it feel more like a moderate or 'lightly challenging' hike at times.
The trail features diverse terrain, starting with steep forest paths and transitioning to dirt tracks. A significant portion follows an ancient Nazari acequia (irrigation channel), where you might walk alongside or directly within the cool water. You'll cross the Dúrcal River multiple times and navigate areas with large boulders, especially as you approach the main waterfall. Expect lush vegetation, numerous water holes, and glittering river sections.
The trail is a circular route from Dúrcal. While specific parking details aren't provided, Dúrcal is the starting point. You can often find parking in or near the town, especially close to the Dúrcal River Recreation Area, which is a highlight along the route and likely has facilities.
The trail is particularly popular during warmer months due to its abundant water features and opportunities to cool off. However, be aware that higher river levels during spring melt can increase the difficulty. For a refreshing experience with swimming opportunities, late spring through early autumn is generally ideal, but always check local conditions.
While many trails in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park are dog-friendly, specific regulations for this particular route regarding dogs are not detailed. Given the need for sure-footedness, narrow paths, and walking through water, ensure your dog is comfortable with such conditions and always keep them on a leash to protect wildlife and other hikers.
No, you do not need a permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike the Route of the Cascada de los Bolos. It is located within the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, which is generally open to the public for hiking without specific permits for day use. Always respect local regulations and leave no trace.
Along the route, you'll encounter spectacular gorge views, pass under the historic Puente de Piedra (stone bridge), and discover smaller waterfalls and pools. Key highlights include the breathtaking Cascada de los Bolos itself, the Dúrcal River Recreation Area, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception of Dúrcal near the start/end of the circular route.
While generally considered easy, some sources suggest that parts of the trail might not be suitable for children under 12 due to potential risks from narrow sections, drops, and the need to navigate large boulders and walk through water. Parental discretion and close supervision are advised, especially in challenging sections.
Given the trail involves walking through water and potentially slippery sections, appropriate footwear that can get wet and won't cause blisters is essential. Consider water shoes or sturdy sandals in warmer months. Also, bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection, and a swimsuit if you plan to enjoy the refreshing pools.
Yes, the route partially overlaps with several other paths. Notably, it covers a significant portion of the Río Dúrcal - Baños trail (76%) and also intersects sections of the Circular Sierra Dúrcal - La Esperanza (44%) and Camino del Pecho Margena (48%).
Yes, Dúrcal is a town with amenities. The Dúrcal River Recreation Area is a highlight along the route and may offer some facilities. You can also find cafes, pubs, and other services within Dúrcal itself before or after your hike.
The first part of the hike was very relaxed through orchards and on wide paths along the gorge and a levada. Great view of the mountains. Right at the turning point things got weird and the map no longer matched up. Suddenly there was a descent into the river and a path was no longer really visible. On the map you were supposed to go to the right of the river, but there was no path at all. There were also a lot of loud shots that you couldn't determine the direction of. After walking through the river and crossing several times, the path became wider again. I neither saw nor heard the waterfall.
