Hiking

Embark on a moderate 7.3-mile (11.8 km) hike along the picturesque River Wharfe, a journey that typically takes around 3 hours and 7 minutes to complete. This loop from Bolton Abbey guides you through a diverse landscape, featuring wide gravel paths, undulating footpaths, and ancient deciduous woodlands like Strid Wood, home to sessile oaks. You will gain 364 feet (111 metres) in elevation as you traverse open fields and moorland, with uphill sections revealing expansive views of the green Wharfedale landscape and the historic Bolton Priory ruins.

Planning your visit is convenient, as the area offers several car parks near the trailhead. Along the route, you will find amenities such as cafes, including the Cavendish Pavilion, and various picnic areas, perfect for a mid-hike break. While the full loop presents a moderate challenge, the trail's adaptability allows you to shorten your walk by utilizing multiple bridges for alternative crossings, making it accessible for different fitness levels.

This trail is notable for its blend of natural beauty and rich history, highlighted by the dramatic Strid, where the River Wharfe is forced through a narrow gorge, creating powerful currents. You can also cross the river via 60 iconic stepping stones near Bolton Abbey, or use a nearby bridge if water levels are high. The route offers a unique opportunity to explore the atmospheric ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian Bolton Priory, adding a significant historical dimension to your outdoor adventure in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Bolton Abbey Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Bolton Abbey is situated in a peaceful location on the banks of the River Wharfe. It dates to the 12th century and is a former Augustinian monastery. The monastery closed in 1539 after King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries. Today, you will find it an atmospheric and interesting place to visit.

Bolton Abbey Stepping Stones

Highlight • Beach

The iconic stepping stones across the River Wharfe to Bolton Abbey were once used as a crossing for lay workers coming to the priory. The 60 stones make for a fun crossing of the river these days. But if the water is too high, or if you just don’t fancy it, there is a bridge nearby. North of the stepping stones is a large beach area which can be enjoyed in good weather.

Cavendish Pavilion

Highlight • River

You'll find the Pavilion in the heart of The Bolton Abbey Estate. Great for grabbing some refreshments and something to eat then heading to the riverside to enjoy them. Whether part of your day out or your sole reason for visiting, the surroundings are simply idyllic. Fresh sandwiches, pizzas and delicious cakes are all made daily on site. During the colder months this area is less frequented, however during the warmer months this area will be very busy, as will the riverside, so be warned.

During non-lockdown/covid times this area can be hired for a wedding venue and is a fantastic party venue.

Dogs welcome in all outside areas.

Opening Hours:
Open every day except Christmas Day from 10am.
Sandwiches, hot and cold drinks and cakes are served throughout the day.

The Strid

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Strid is a natural wonder, where the river suddenly narrows forcing the water through at great pressure. It was formed by the wearing away of softer rock by the circular motion of small stones in hollows. The Strid is positioned in the heart of Strid Wood - depending on how far you wish to walk the Strid can be accessed from all three Bolton Abbey car parks.

Please note the Strid is very dangerous and lives have been lost. Take note of the signs in this area and stay well back from the edge.

Note: parking is £15 regardless if you want to visit the Abbey or not. But plenty of refreshments along the way and toilets are immaculate. There is also a gift shop and some nice keepsakes in the priory but only accepts cash in the priory. Also wildlife in abundance. Especially birds.
