Easy and pleasant family hike in a beautiful setting, in the heart of the Charentais coast. No tourist overcrowding. Consult the passage times at low tide for Passe aux Boeufs (Isle Madame timetables).
The Île Madame is an island off the French coast. It is one of the four islands of the Charente-Maritime, next to the Île d'Oléron, the Île de Ré and the Île d'Aix. Of these four, it is the only one that belongs to a municipality located on the mainland, namely Port-des-Barques. At low tide it is connected to the mainland by a road of sand and stones, the Passe aux Bœufs ("cow walk"). If the road is flooded at high tide, you have to wait another twelve hours. It is very quiet on the island and we enjoy the fauna and flora.
