Hiking

Embark on a challenging yet rewarding hike through Dartmoor National Park with the Yes Tor & High Willhays loop from Meldon Reservoir. This moderate route spans 7.5 miles (12.1 km) and involves a significant elevation gain of 1318 feet (402 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 39 minutes to complete. You will experience varied terrain, from broad grassy tracks near Meldon Reservoir to stony paths and open moorland, with sections that can be wet and boggy after rain, especially during the steep climb to High Willhays. Enjoy sweeping views from the summits and a peaceful interlude in the ancient Black-a-Tor Copse.

Before you set out, be aware that parts of this route cross the Okehampton Military Firing Range. Always check firing times beforehand, as access can be restricted, and red flags indicate live firing. Navigation can be tricky, particularly if mist descends, so carrying a compass and knowing how to use it is strongly advised, as some paths are faint or undefined. The trailhead is accessible from Meldon Reservoir, offering a clear starting point for your adventure.

This trail is notable for taking you to both High Willhays and Yes Tor, which are the highest points in southern England, offering expansive panoramic views across Dartmoor, Exmoor, and even Cornwall. You will also discover the unique high-altitude oak woodland of Black-a-Tor Copse and pass by the impressive Meldon Viaduct. The diverse landscape showcases Dartmoor's wild beauty, from tranquil reservoir waters to rugged moorland, making it a truly distinctive hiking experience.

West Mill Tor

Highlight • Summit

If you are hiking to Yes Tor, don't pass by West Mill Tor without a visit. It almost looks like the ruins of a castle and is very recognisable.

The views from up here take you all the way across to Exmoor National Park in the north or south west to Yes Tor. Simply stunning.

Yes Tor summit

Highlight • Summit

The second highest point in Dartmoor National Park offers stunning vistas of North Devon and Cornwall. Note: it is close to a military range, so check for firing times before your visit (dartmoor-ranges.co.uk/firing_notice_1.html). Always start out well equipped on tours through Dartmoor!

High Willhays summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

The highest point on Dartmoor and the highest summit south of the Brecon Beacons. Very accessible and an easy hike for most people to do. The best thing is the wonderful views, especially on a sky blue spring day like today. Love raw and rugged Dartmoor!❤️

Black Tor

Highlight • Viewpoint

Black Tor is made from three different rocky outcrops and the view from up here is simply stunning. Especially to Sourton Tors and Shelstone Tor in the north west.

Black Tor is known for its logan stone, the name given to a rock that sways when pushed. Logan stones have become separated from the rest of the rocks through erosion, but when 'logged' they pivot on a contact point and do not over balance. Logged means to roll around drunk in Cornish. The most famous logan stone in Cornwall is probably Logan Rock, near Treen, Penzance.

Meldon Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

This is a great spot for peace and quiet and the bird life is excellent. With a path that runs the full length of the reservoir, this is a great place to take the family. There is paring at the dam wall and routes that go up to Yes tor from there.
This is not a swimming dam and not water activities are allowed on it. You can purchase fishing permits and fish here if you so desire.

For all those who want to walk this route: it's best to take hiking rubber boots! Or particularly waterproof hiking shoes with a high shaft! Due to the very large amounts of water (it hadn't rained in the morning) we struggled with the paths! We constantly had to look for other paths because they were actually flooded, stop, search first …
