Hiking

Embark on the Five Waterfalls loop from Ingleton, a moderate hike through the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. This 4.5-mile (7.3 km) circular route, with 538 feet (164 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 12 minutes to complete. You will follow the River Twiss and River Doe through ancient oak woodlands, encountering varied terrain including uneven, rocky, and sometimes muddy sections, with numerous steps leading to impressive cascades like Thornton Force, a dramatic 14-meter waterfall.

Planning your visit requires sturdy footwear with good grip, as paths can be slippery, especially after rain. The trail is privately managed, so an admission fee is charged to help maintain the paths and facilities. This route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs due to its strenuous sections and many steps. You can enjoy the trail year-round, with each season offering a different perspective on the landscape.

The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), recognized for its unique geological structures and rich biodiversity. As you hike, you will see deep wooded glens carved into Carboniferous limestone and Silurian slate, showcasing millions of years of erosion. Look out for the quirky "Money Tree," a fallen log embedded with thousands of coins, a local tradition believed to bring good luck.

Pecca Falls

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you are completing the fabulous Ingleton Waterfall Walk, Pecca Falls will be your first encounter. The lower fall is the highest and you get a fantastic view from the footbridge crossing the River Twiss. Not far above are the Pecca Twin Falls.

Hollybush Spout Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

Hollybush Spout is a dramatic and powerful waterfall with a drop of approximately 30 feet (9 m). It's set within a deep narrow, rocky cleft.

Thornton Force waterfall

Highlight • Natural Monument

Dropping 46 feet (14 m) over a limestone cliff, Thornton Force will take your breath away when it comes into view. Interestingly, there are several layers to the rock behind the falls and it's possible to measure over 170 million years of geological evolution within the span of one hand.

However, if you are at Thornton Force when the weather is fine, you might be more interested in embracing the water for a refreshing dip and basking in the rocky amphitheatre where it's located. During peak times it can get busy here, so choose your moment to visit.

Beezley Falls

Highlight • Natural Monument

If you are following the Ingleton Waterfall Trail, this is the first fall you encounter on the return part of the journey. There are two sections to Beezley Falls, the main drop followed by the Triple Spout. You are afforded brilliant views of both parts, particularly the Triple Spout which is right next to the path.

Baxenghyll Gorge Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

From the viewing bridge at Baxenghyll Gorge, you're afforded a dramatic view of the River Doe far below. If heights are not your thing, then this might not be for you. For most people, though, you will find this terrific view as thrilling as it is stunning.

Free entry on Christmas day! Beautiful walk must do!
A spectacular hike past a number of waterfalls and great scenery. There is a £10 entrance fee to the walk but I believe the money goes towards the upkeep of the paths on what would be very precarious terrain without them. Impressive waterfalls, great views of Ingleborough and the peace and quiet of the dales once you get above the …
October 21, 2021,Ingleton waterfall walk
Stunning walk up the River Twiss and down the River Doe past incredible waterfalls (6 main falls) currently in full spate.
The organised one way path is probably necessary though might possibly feel a little “Disney theme park” on a busy day.
Well worth the trip though.
Spectacular scenery, spectacularly busy and spectacularly expensive @£10 per adult!

A fantastic walk with great views! The Waterfalls were spectacular i would highly recommend this walk £10 pp entry includes car park, lots of steps up and down so it's not an easy walk
First time doing Ingleton waterfall walk for me, loved it. X valentines 2022. X
Super nice hike, not long, but really "over hill and dale" :-) chargeable: 10 pounds per nose

Showing Translation

If you're after a walk with an excessive amount of waterfalls, then look no further.

Around waterfall 4 or 5 (I lost count) a rickety thin bridge has you dangling 50ft above one of the ice-age death canyons where thousands of gallons of water smash their way past jagged rocks below your feet 😬
