This circular route will bring us closer to some of the natural borders of the old county. On the one hand, the River Ter and the Montgrí massif to the south and, on the other, the Mediterranean Sea to the east. It is a very flat route in which you head south inland to Verges, to return along the coast, passing through Sant Martí d'Empúries and Sant Pere Pescador.

The Route starts south from Figueres as you cross cultivated fields along agricultural roads, and towns such as Vilamalla, Siurana, Sant Miquel de Fluvià and Ventalló. You find the first Place of interest in Marenyà, a small district of the Tallada d'Empordà, where you can admire the small and humble church of Sant Esteve de Mareny. This is a perfect example of the sober and frugal character of the Romanesque in the area.
After traveling a couple of kilometers between fields, you arrive at the fortified church of Santa Maria de la Tallada d'Empordà, the only structure that remains standing in the walled enclosure that protected the town.

The Route continues to Verges, where you will pass through its picturesque town center before heading east and towards the sea. The proximity to the river Ter also marked the border of the county. This is why you will visit one of the castles dedicated to its defense. After Verges, Bellcaire d'Empordà is your next destination. Always with the imposing Montgrí massif and its castle in the distance. In Bellcaire you can visit its fortress, of which its central courtyard and some of its defense towers have been preserved.

A little further north, you find another castle, the Castell d'Albons. Converted today into private homes. There you will head straight for the coast to follow a picturesque bike path that goes from l'Escala to Sant Martí d'Empúries. This section separates the beautiful beaches of the area from the Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries.

In the tiny town of Sant Martí d'Empúries, various buildings await you, such as the church, built on the remains of a medieval castle of which some walls still remain, or the Casa Forestal. From there you have privileged views of the Gulf of Roses and the town of l'Escala.

You leave Sant Martí d'Empúries along a bike path that takes you to Sant Pere Pescador after crossing the Fluvià river again. From there, and by road, you get to Vilamacolum, and then continue along farm roads to Far d'Empordà. And finally back to Figueres.

Sant Esteve de Marenyà Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church of Sant Esteve de Marenyà is located in this small nucleus, belonging to the municipality of Tallada d'Empordà. The original construction, lateral walls and the apse, dates from the 11th century, while the front is from the 13th century. Later, in the XV-XVI centuries, fortification structures were built, which required the addition of buttresses on both sides.

Inside the church, in the apse, there are paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries, which represent the stoning of Sant Esteve, the crucifixion and the visit of the three Marys to the tomb of Jesus Christ.

This fortified church of Romanesque origin dates from the year 1151 and occupies the northern corner of the old walled enclosure of La Tallada. It is a building with a single nave, with a semicircular apse and two annexed chapels, one on each side of the nave. The vault has a pointed arch, and is crowned by a bell tower with two lowered arch openings, to which a clock was added in 1937.

It was fortified during the 16th century, raising the apse and turning it into a defense tower and providing it with loopholes. In the 18th century the sacristy and the side chapels were added.

Bellcaire Castle

Highlight • Castle

Square-plan castle located in the upper part of Bellcaire d’Empordà. It consists of a central courtyard and a walled outer enclosure with battered walls, defended by six circular towers. The western wing is occupied by a building, probably the main hall of the castle.

The castle was built at the end of the 13th century, to improve the defenses of the county, due to the disputes between the Count of Empúries Ponç V and King Jaime II (who in turn had ordered the construction of the castle of Torroella de Montgrí and that of Albons).

Currently its south wing is the seat of the Bellcaire d'Empordà town hall, while the west wing houses the parish church.

Castell d'Albons

Highlight • Castle

Documented since the year 1170, the Castell d'Albons stood on a hill between the River Ter and the Fluvià, right on the border between the domains of the County of Empúries and those of King Jaume II.

The castle is currently divided into private homes, and after the reforms suffered in the last century, its appearance is that of a large fortified manor house. It has a rectangular floor plan with an interior patio (not open to visitors), and borders with the church of Sant Cugat.

Church of Sant Martí d'Empúries

Highlight • Religious Site

Sant Martí d'Empúries is a beautiful medieval town where a good part of the medieval wall is still preserved, as well as the church of Sant Martí, built in 1538. Next to the remains of the castle is the Casa Forestal, style modernist, which contrasts with medieval architecture.
