Gravel ascent to the sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Mont

This Route takes you to the highest point of this Collection, the Mare de Déu del Mont Sanctuary, located at a thousand meters above sea level and with fantastic views of both the Empordà plain and the eastern Pyrenees. It is a route of almost 100 kilometers that includes the demanding ascent to the sanctuary and whose route runs for more than half of its length on paved roads.

You leave Figueres heading west towards the mountains. Depending on the time of year you will be able to see the first snow-capped peaks of the Pyrenees. You head towards the area known as Garrotxa d'Empordà, where the agricultural mosaic begins to merge with the forests and where the plain gives way to narrow valleys that make their way between the first mountains of the Pyrenees.

After going through towns like Vilafant, Borrasà, Ordis or Navata, following quiet roads, you arrive at Lladó. It is at this point where the monastery of Santa Maria de Lladó is located, an excellent sample of the simple and austere Romanesque of the area. Before leaving Lladó, make sure you take enough water and, if necessary, food, since you will have a 16-kilometre climb to the top of the Mare de Déu del Mont sanctuary. It is a long road climb with a moderate drop until about halfway up. Then it hardens as you get closer to the top.

Before reaching the sanctuary, you will first pass by the ruins of the monastery of Sant Llorenç de Sous, seriously affected by an earthquake in 1428, and which are right next to the road. Despite its general state, parts of the cloister, remains of the abbey, and the church are fairly well preserved.

From the monastery to the sanctuary you have two and a half kilometers with quite a slope. However, the effort will be worth it. Its excellent views from its viewpoint of both the Empordà plain and towards l'Alta Garrotxa and the Salines massif will leave you speechless. In the same sanctuary there is a restaurant and guest house, open every Friday and weekends of the year as well as on holidays and their vigils.

The Route continues returning along the same access road to the sanctuary. However, after traveling ten kilometres, take a detour to the left to follow a track that will take you to Sant Llorenç de la Muga. Make sure you have enough water and some emergency snacks because, after leaving the sanctuary, you have 35 kilometers to the next town, Albanyà. This section alternates parts of a gravel track with cement and asphalt. In addition, the last ten kilometers to Sant Llorenç de la Muga are by road.

Sant Llorenç de la Muga is a spectacular medieval town, excellently preserved and whose walled streets are worth exploring. In the town there are several restaurants and a fountain where you can fill your fresh water canisters. After leaving Sant Llorenç de la Muga, you continue along the road and, after overcoming a couple of kilometers uphill, you will only have 15 kilometers left to reach the end of the Route in Figueres. However, before concluding the stage you will have to cross towns like Terrades or Llers, always by road and gently downhill.

Monastery of Santa Maria de Lladó

Highlight • Religious Site

It is a basilica-style temple, oriented to the east, with three naves finished with semicircular apses.
Internally, the system of columns attached to the pillars is adopted to support the four toral arches.
The vault of the central nave is a pointed barrel, higher than the sides, covered with a quarter circle and the apses are covered with a quarter sphere vault. On the outside, the central nave is covered on two sides with Arabic tiles and the sides on a slightly inclined slope.
The west facade is centered by the portal where one of the most remarkable sculptural ensembles of the 12th century is represented.
This facade follows the arrangement of the naves: the central one is higher than the lateral ones, with three bodies in a horizontal direction.
The first with the large portal, the second with an opening and a third, which seems to be an addition to the original structure.
In the nave on the right, a pair of battlements have been incorporated that support the bell tower system. .
On either side of the door are tombstones set into the wall.
The central apse has a double-slit window that is decorated on the outside with a small column on each side.
In the south wall there are three windows, two redone when removing the chapel of Sant Lambert and the 18th century sacristy in a recent restoration.

Santa Maria de Lladó has been documented since 1089 (the place of Lladó has been since 977), the date of the act of restoration of worship and monastic life by the spouses Adalbert and Alamberga, lords of Navata, and their sons who unjustly withheld that holy place, which had previously been rich and strong.
A community could already have existed there in the Visigothic period.
The community was established there under the rule of Sant Agustí.
In 1124, Pope Calixtus II approved the foundation and statutes of the canonry and confirmed its assets.
It is believed that it was during the time of prior Arnau Coll (1136-1196) that the various dependencies of Santa Maria de Lladó were built.
In 1186, this prior was accused in Rome of embezzlement of the community's assets, a fact that must have had as background the aforementioned works, since it seems that from that moment on they will continue with much less luxury (unfinished bell towers on the front, nave capitals without ornamentation).
Between the years 1982 and 1994, several comprehensive restoration campaigns were carried out in the premises and the space was adapted as an exhibition hall."

The church of Sant Llorenç de Sous was a temple located within the monastery of the old town of Sous. At present, only the ruins of the church of the monastery remain, damaged by the earthquakes of the 15th century, which forced them to abandon it definitively in the 18th century to build the current church of Sant Llorenç.

The sanctuary of the Mare de Déu del Mont is located on the peak of the Sierra del Mont, at an altitude of 1,124 metres. Next to the sanctuary we find the statue of Jacint Verdaguer and an incredible viewpoint to appreciate the landscape that surrounds the mountain, from the Empordà plain, the Alta Garrotxa to the southern slopes of the Pyrenees.

The sanctuary is located on the summit of a mountain, Mont, and enjoys privileged views over the Empordà plain and the mountains of Alta Garrotxa and the southern slopes of the Girona Pyrenees. The adjoining church dates from the late Romanesque period, built in the early 14th century, with a pointed barrel vault. In the 18th century, an inn was built, famous for having hosted the poet Jacint Verdaguer, who wrote one of his most famous poems here, "Canigó" (a mountain in the Pyrenees visible from here). In 2008, a public subscription funded a two-meter-high bronze statue of the poet. The inn currently operates as a restaurant and hotel.

Church of Sant Llorenç de la Muga

Highlight • Religious Site

santllorencdelamuga.cat/ca/Sant Llorenç de la Muga is located in the high Muga valley, in an area also known as the mountain Empordà or the Garrotxa d'Empordà due to its mountainous terrain.

The urban center is located in a pronounced meander of the La Muga river, which crosses the municipal area in a route of eleven kilometers, where there is a great diversity of pools.

The medieval walled enclosure stands out for its good state of conservation, as well as most of the houses in the old town. In the center of Sant Lllorenç there are very pleasant corners that are part of the history of the town.

Sant Llorenç preserves the spirit of a quiet and welcoming rural town. The Sant Llorenç mountains, low in altitude and with a wide range of rural roads, trails and forest tracks, allow you to enjoy this natural space all year round, with changing landscapes depending on the season.

Scattered throughout this territory of mountains near the river, you can find small architectural treasures such as the hermitage of San Jorge, the oratory of Sant Ponç, the hermitage and the bridge of San Antonio near La Muga, the hermitage and the fountain of Palau, the Old Bridge or the Lion Fountain.
