Church of the Crucifix (Iglesia del Crucifijo)

Highlight • Religious Site

This place of worship, which is named after the Holy Cross (Latin "Santa Croce"), relates its patronage to the cross on which Jesus Christ died. The veneration of the Holy Cross goes back in large part to Saint Helena, who was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great (who, after his victory at the "Milvian Bridge" outside Rome, recognized Christianity as a religion and in 312 the long time of persecution ended with the Milan “Tolerance Edict”). In the early fourth century she undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Israel / Palestine) and brought numerous relics from there to Europe, including the "True Cross" on which Jesus Christ was crucified. Helena is therefore often depicted with a cross as an attribute. The feast of the discovery, public presentation and veneration of the Holy Cross - called "Exaltation of the Cross" - is celebrated by the Church on September 14th.

Church of Santiago (Puente la Reina)

Highlight • Religious Site

With an unmistakable Gothic style on the outside, its construction dates back to the 16th century, which preserves some vestiges of the old Romanesque temple on which it was built. It is the most important church in the town of Puente la Reina and a place of great interest for all the pilgrims who travel the Camino de Santiago Frances.

Puente la Reina (Basque Gares) is a municipality with 2840 inhabitants. In Puente la Reina, the Aragonese and Navarrese branches of the Way of St. James meet, the common path crossing the Arga river via the bridge of the same name.

The name and development are linked to the bridge donated by Dona Mayor, Queen of Navarre, wife of King Sancho Mayor, or her daughter-in-law. Despite all the uncertainty regarding the founder, the construction of the bridge in the first half of the 11th century is certain.

Because river crossings were dangerous, detours were long and ferry services expensive, the streams of pilgrims soon concentrated on this bridge. This was followed by the settlement of Franks and the founding of a market town. The development of the city is an example of the infrastructure projects of this time and their effect, and can often be found in a comparable form on the Way of St. James.

In 1122 it received city rights, from 1235 the construction of the city wall began. García IV donated the city to the Templars, and after their dissolution at the beginning of the 14th century, it passed to the Hospitallers.
