Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to complete this circular hike?

This circular hike usually takes around 4 hours and 40 minutes to complete. This duration is an estimate and can vary based on your pace, breaks, and weather conditions.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The trail is primarily mountain hiking paths, with some unpaved sections and very little asphalt. You'll start in pine forests, then ascend into rope meadows. Expect hard slopes after leaving the forest, especially as you head towards the cliffs of Alto del Puerto. Sure-footedness is required.

What natural features and viewpoints can I expect to see along the way?

You'll encounter spectacular views, especially from the summit of Nevero Peak (2,209 m), where you can admire the Lozoya Valley and the Peñalara massif. The route also passes through the Hoyos de Pinilla, a glacial cirque with small lagoons, and offers evidence of ancient glaciation like moraines.

Are there any historical points of interest on the route?

Yes, the area holds historical significance. Near Alto de Porrinoso, you can find remains of shepherd's corrals or military posts from the Civil War, as the Sierra de Guadarrama was a front during that period. Evidence like trenches and fortifications can still be seen.

Where does the trail start and is there parking available?

Many routes in this area, including sections of this one, often start near a parking lot, such as at Puerto de Navafría. This is a common starting point for accessing the higher elevations.

What's the best strategy for parking at the trailhead?

Parking at popular spots like Puerto de Navafría can get very busy, especially during peak seasons or when there's snow. It's advisable to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot, particularly on weekends or holidays.

Is this trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, specific rules may apply, especially regarding leashing and protected areas. Always keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure their safety, particularly in high-altitude or sensitive zones.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant conditions for hiking, with milder temperatures and beautiful scenery. Spring is particularly good to see the lagoons at Hoyos de Pinilla during the thaw. Summer can be hot, and winter requires specialized gear.

What are the conditions like for winter hiking?

Winter conditions can be severe, involving cold, strong winds, fog, snow, and ice. If you plan to hike in winter, you'll need appropriate gear, including crampons and ice axes for certain ascents, especially through channels like the V-2 of Hoya de Pinilla. Always check the weather forecast before you go.

Do I need any permits or is there an entrance fee for hiking in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park?

Generally, there are no entrance fees or specific permits required for day hiking on established trails within the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. However, always check the official park regulations for any updates or specific requirements for certain activities or areas.

Does this route connect with other trails?

Yes, sections of this route overlap with other trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the [CIMA MA06] Navafría, La Horizontal, [CIMA SE03] Navafría, and the Pista esquí de fondo Navafría trails during your hike.

Trail Reviews

Oxígeno
May 12, 2022, Pico Nevero (2.209 m) y circos glaciares

The Nevero peak massif (2,209 m) is one of the important and outstanding peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, it has glacial modeling, mountain lagoons, native forests and is the best natural balcony to contemplate the beautiful landscape of the Valle del Lozoya and the peaks of Cuerda Larga from the heights of the mountains. The ascent through the Navafría pass is not complicated, it has the distance of a pleasant mountain walk with extraordinary panoramic views. Problems following the path can appear on foggy or blizzard days, when there is poor visibility and a lot of wind coming from the Segovian plain. In the section of the rope there are no references and it would be difficult to follow the path in the meadows of the highest hills to the summit. The route includes the secondary summit of Alto de Porrinoso (2,160 m), which is surrounded by the glacial cirques of Hoyo Borrascoso, Hoyo Cerrado and de los Hoyos, which together with Hoyos de Pinilla, in the Nevero, are the remains of the most isolated, solitary and unknown geological phenomena of glacial origin in the Sierra de Guadarrama.
