Mountain biking

The Col des Chavannes — Giro ad anello is a difficult mountain biking loop that takes you on a 30.4-mile (49.0 km) journey through Italy's Aosta Valley. You will climb a significant 5599 feet (1707 metres) over approximately 5 hours and 16 minutes, experiencing diverse terrain from asphalt and gravel to challenging singletrack. The route offers spectacular panoramic views of the Mont Blanc massif and Roc d'Enfer, winding through the Dora di Verney river valley and past the picturesque Lago Combal.

This challenging route demands advanced riding skills and a very good level of fitness, especially for its S3 sections where pushing or carrying your bike may be necessary. You will find sections rated S1 and S2, but also very exposed and stony parts suitable only for experts. The best time to undertake this ride is typically from early June to mid-October, depending on snow conditions.

The trail is a key point along the renowned Alta Via della Valle d'Aosta n. 2, offering an immersive high alpine experience. Along the way, you can stop at mountain huts like Rifugio Elisabetta, which provides a restaurant, terrace, and excellent views. This strategic location and its breathtaking vistas make it a memorable journey through one of the most beautiful regions of the Alps.

Magnificent place, easy climb from La Thuile even in gravel. Descent towards the valley on stony ground, only for experts. Moderately complicated in portage.

Val Veny Descent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

From Col des Chavannes starts the descent on a very technical and difficult path in the first 4-5 hairpin bends, for safety it is better to do it on foot, then it becomes gradually more and more smooth and pleasant. Pay attention to some passages a little exposed

Elisabetta Soldini Montanaro Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Elisabetta Soldini refuge is located in an enchanting place, at the foot of the Mont Blanc glacier. Two famous routes pass through here: the Tour of Mont Blanc and the Alta Via 2 of the Aosta Valley.

Moving on to this point, instinct will ask you for a break. The colors of the river, flowers and surrounding mountains create a wonderful contrast. It is impossible to forget this glimpse: when I think of my Mont Blanc Tour this is one of the first images that my mind offers me.

Nice, relaxed e-mountain bike tour over the Col des Chavannes.

After we cycled the ultimate awesome tour yesterday, there was hardly any way to top it in the Aosta area. At my buddy's request, today it was to be an easier round. More in the S1 range than S2. For the inexperienced biker, the last two days were understandably quite …

Departure from the Du Parc campsite, between Morgex and Pre Saint Didier, an excellent base for several tours in the area. Climb on asphalt towards La Thuile, sweet and excellent for warming up the leg. Also because shortly after the town of La Thuile you turn right and you start to get serious. Always on asphalt with slopes between 12 …

Ring route, starting from La Thuile, covering the entire Val Chavannes and Val Veny, returning to La Thuile.
From La Thuile take the SS26 state road up to the deviation, just before Pont Serrand, which leads to Val Chavannes. The road to the Le Lapin farmhouse is asphalted, uphill and with a good slope. When you arrive at the farmhouse, …

Magnificent tour! Shortcut of the full tour from Courmayeur. The first part of the descent is not very rideable and exposed... the rest is pleasant and above all a magnificent view 🤩
