Mountain biking

Embark on the Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) circular, a difficult mountain biking route known as the "Classic Loop" in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. This challenging ride covers 11.5 miles (18.5 km) with a significant 3316 feet (1011 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 2 hours and 33 minutes. You will ascend the popular Llanberis Path, which features loose, rocky sections and steps, before tackling the highly technical Snowdon Ranger Path descent with its tight drops, loose rocks, and sweeping switchbacks, all set against a backdrop of rugged mountains and glacier-carved valleys.

When planning your ride, be aware of the Voluntary Cycling Agreement (VCA) on Yr Wyddfa. This agreement requests that you do not ride to or from the summit on the Llanberis and Snowdon Ranger paths between 10:00 and 17:00 from May 1st to September 30th. Outside these hours and between October 1st and April 30th, you have full access to these bridleways. Remember that you are legally required to give way to pedestrians and horse riders on all bridleways.

This circular route is considered an ultimate mountain biking challenge in Wales and a bucket-list ride for many experienced cyclists. The combination of a sustained, physically demanding climb and a thrilling, technical descent makes it a memorable adventure. The VCA demonstrates a collaborative effort to ensure access for cyclists while maintaining safety and enjoyment for all users within the national park.

Llanberis Path

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This is one of the three bridleway climbs up Snowdon that is permissible for cycling. You'll need a mountain bike, and to follow the summer access restrictions on Snowdon.

Don't ride between 10am – 5pm between 1st May – 30th September (it won't be much fun for anyone... the route will be too busy with hikers to enjoy the descent).

Snowdon Summit and Visitor Centre

Highlight (Segment) • Summit

Although some sections at Snowdon's summit are unrideable, hiking your bike up to the 3,560 foot (1,085 m) peak is well worth it.

The views are nothing short of spectacular, there's a busy cafe should you need to refuel, as well as a train back down, though you'd be missing one of the longest, most enjoyable mountain descents in the UK!

Please take note of the voluntary cycling agreement on Snowdon and avoid riding to or from the summit between 10am and 5pm from the 1st May to the 30th September.

Snowdon Summit (Yr Wyddfa)

Highlight • Summit

Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) is perhaps the most ascended mountain in the world, and with good reason. This is a majestic mountain, as is befitting of Wales' highest point.

Its glory lies in the myriad routes to the summit. There's everything from the gentle inclines of the Llanberis path to the knife-edged arête of Crib Goch. The south side of the mountain is generally quieter, with the South Ridge in particular a fine route up. The Miners' and Pyg Tracks are straightforward, classic approaches that enter the incredible natural amphitheatre that holds Llyn Llydaw and Glaslyn.

To get the summit to yourself, rise early and avoid peak season.

Snowdon Ranger Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

As well as a climb, the Ranger's Path is probably the most celebrated of the mountain bikeable descents of Snowdon. Immensely rewarding, fast with a liberal scattering of techy, thrutchy sections.

If you manage to clean the whole thing, you're doing exceptionally well, but even if you decide to walk a few sections, they're not long, and there's still plenty more fun stuff below you.

Do watch out for walkers, though, and beware of the Voluntary Cycle Agreement which bans bikes between 10am and 5pm between 1 May and 30 Sept.

Telegraph Valley (Maesgwm)

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Maesgwm is also known as Telegraph Valley. The trail is gravel and well-made, brilliant to ride and much quieter than the main Llanberis path. It makes a great loop from Llanberis, using a section of the Ranger.

Rideable in both directions.
