Road cycling

This difficult road cycling route, spanning 34.3 miles (55.1 km) with a significant 4008 feet (1222 metres) of elevation gain, offers a demanding ride through West Yorkshire. Expect rolling hills and expansive moorland, with dramatic views across the South Pennines and into the Peak District National Park. You'll encounter tranquil reservoirs and woodlands, alongside classic Pennine scenery with country lanes winding between dry-stone walls and hillside villages. The route, which typically takes around 3 hours and 17 minutes, includes challenging gradients, making it a hard road ride requiring very good fitness. You might even need to push your bike on some segments due to the steep climbs, especially when departing from Holmfirth.

This challenging loop starts from Holmfirth, a town nestled among steep hills, meaning your ride will immediately involve significant climbing. The terrain features mostly well-paved surfaces, but the demanding gradients mean you should be prepared for a hard road ride. Cyclists with less fitness might find themselves needing to push their bikes on some of the steeper segments. Ensure you have very good fitness before attempting this route, as it is consistently described as demanding. The area is known for its challenging climbs, including the famous Holme Moss.

This trail stands out as the most popular road cycling route in the Holme Valley area, drawing experienced cyclists seeking to test their endurance. It offers panoramic vistas across the South Pennines and into the Peak District, showcasing the rugged beauty of the region. The route provides a diverse visual experience, traversing a mix of moorland, valleys, and villages, including the Wessenden Valley with its glorious scenery. Holmfirth itself is also known as the filming location for "Last of the Summer Wine," adding a cultural element to the scenic beauty.

Slaithwaite village and canal

Highlight • River

Apparently, it is the only village with a canal alongside the main street!
Commercial Hotel is recommended, located next to the main street (and canal) with a small sitting area out the front. It has an excellent selection of real ales including a couple of their own at very keen prices. Good selection of pubs and restaurants, so a good place for a stop when on a long-distance tour.

This is a lovely road which, if cycling towards Marsden, runs through the forest in the northern end and opens up to beautiful views across the Colne Valley.

It's a stiff climb at the bottom if you're cycling in the reverse direction but the views are just as good.

Bank Bottom Mill, Marsden

Highlight • Other

Marsden's history is in the production of woollen cloth. Bank Bottom Mill, which was operational until 2003, covered an area of 14 acres and is very recognisable to the south of the village.

It is also home to the Standedge Tunnel (pronounced without the 'd'), the longest and deepest canal tunnel in Britain which passes under the Pennines to Diggle in Saddleworth. It is over 5km long!

Mount Road Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

Don't look up as the climb just stares you in the face ! Once you're up on the top though, the descent into Diggle is top class

Standedge Cutting

Highlight • Structure

The cutting here in the road was dug in 1839 to take the Wakefield to Austerlands Toll Road across the South Pennines. The area is part of the National Trust's Marsden Moor Estate. There has been a road across Standegde since Roman times when it was part of a route connecting York and Chester.

Pule Hill can be seen in the distance if you are approaching from the direction of Marsden.

Holmfirth Road Climb (Dovestone Reservoir)

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

Known locally as the “Isle of Skye” after a long-since closed pub. A long, steady, almost alpine-like climb. Nice views across Dovestones reservoir. There tend to be a lot of parked cars along the road on nice days.

Digley Reservoir

Highlight • Structure

Digley Reservoir is a picturesque stretch of water that’s just within the boundary of the Peak District National Park. Situated below Bilberry Reservoir, Digley is nestled within a scenic landscape of woods, fields and moors.

Holmfirth town centre

Highlight • Historical Site

Good selection of cafes and take away food shops in a scenic town. Down side is that the town is surrounded by steep hills so any bike ride will require hard work to leave the town.
The Riverside cafe (at first floor level near the river) is popular with cyclists.
