Hiking
Embark on a challenging hike from the historic Abbey of Trisulti to Monte Rotonaria, a difficult 8.7-mile (14.0 km) loop that demands good training. You will gain 3712 feet (1131 metres) in elevation over approximately 5 hours and 42 minutes, navigating through dense beech forests known as the Selva d'Ecio. The trail offers exceptional panoramic views of the Trisulti Abbey from Monte Porca and expansive vistas of the Ciociaria region and Ernici Mountains from Monte Rotonaria's summit.
This physically demanding route, marked as CAI path number 8, features a constant ascent followed by a long, careful descent and a final tiring climb of about 160 metres. The terrain is predominantly natural, with dirt roads, unpaved sections, and some asphalt, often covered in undergrowth, stones, and roots. Be prepared for a steady pace and ensure you are well-trained for the significant elevation changes.
The journey begins at the Certosa di Trisulti, a former Carthusian monastery founded in 1204, now managed by Cistercians and recognized as a national monument. Explore its beautiful Baroque architecture and the 18th-century pharmacy, which historically produced liqueurs and medicines. Monte Rotonaria itself is notable, once called "Rotondario" for its circular southern face, and the area is home to wildlife like squirrels, woodpeckers, and even golden eagles.
