Pogallo River Natural Pools

Highlight • River

This swimming spot is simply magical! It is located downstream of a powerful waterfall which creates several swimming pools thanks to a flat area of the Pogallo river.
If its crystal clear, turquoise water makes you want to jump in, you will still have to work hard to put your head under the water, as it displays very cool temperatures.
The bridge that leads there is not indicated. So pay attention to the small fork that goes off to the right of the mule path.

On hot days, the site is quite busy, but don't hesitate to go down along the river, a little further down.

Pogallo Abandoned Village

Highlight • Settlement

Pogallo is an old lumberjack village set on a beautiful green terrace, exposed to the sun. The village is responsible for what is now called the great deforestation of the early 20th century.
Although this set of buildings is still standing, few souls live there all year round. Indeed Pogallo is very isolated and accessible only on foot, by the mule path which goes into the canyon of the Pogallo river.

Hikers take note: the Pogallo lawns are a wonderful picnic spot. You can also find a drinking water fountain which is also indicated by signs.

Alpe del Braco Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Not much remains of Alpe del Braco, but the foundations are still there to recall a time when mountain pasture was common in these harsh and steep mountains.

Alpe Leciurt is one of the many alpine remains that can be found in Val Grande. While some are still in excellent condition, this one is more dilapidated. The roofs no longer exist and some walls have fallen.
Alpe Leciurt offers a superb panorama of the Val Grande mountains.

Alpage, or alp, is a practice that has been abandoned in the Val Grande National Park. But we find along the trails many remnants of the time when the herds went up to the mountain pastures in these mountains. These remains are essentially small sets of stone buildings where the herdsmen lived.

Alpe Pra is therefore one of them.

The Casa Dell'Alpino refuge was built right next to it, a few dozen meters away.

Have you ever driven for miles on a very narrow road???
Kindergarten 🧸!!!
The road to the starting point in Cicogno is so narrow that I held my breath for seven kilometers uphill and seven kilometers downhill on the way back 🙈

A beautiful circular tour through the wild Val Grande, including a visit to the now-abandoned village/alpine pasture of Pogallo, followed by a challenging climb to Alpe Pra, where, surprisingly, the Rifugio Amici delgi Alpini was open. Lunch followed by a descent to Cicogna, first along the beautiful stone mule track, then along the steep trail.
The route is 5-star, because …

The tour was really adventurous. Actually even the drive to the starting point.
The tour even pushed me to the limits of my physical condition (which is currently not ideal). Admittedly - I underestimated the tour when planning it. And if the hiking guide already says - black tour - then there is something to it 😅. I should have …
