Bamburgh Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

There has been a castle here for 1400 years, since the Anglo Saxon Kings used it as the stronghold in Northumbria. The current castle sits on a 9 acre rocky plinth, it's one of the largest inhabited castles in the country.
You can visit the castle and the pretty village but some of the best views are from the beach.

View of the Farne Islands

Highlight • Beach

Great views out to the Farne Island. Lovely on the sunny day. But it can be brutal in a cold North Easterly wind, coming right of the North Sea. A route to pick for a nice day

Beadnell Harbour

The only west-facing harbour on Englands East coast ;-)

Dunstanburgh Castle is about a km down the coast from this point but you can't really get there by road bike. You can view it from here or the road at Craster. It's worth a push or lock your bike and go and have a look. Great views of the castle from the beach here though if you just want a photo.
The castle was begun in 1313 by the Earl of Lancaster who was opposed to King Edward II, unfortunatly for him he was defeated and didn't manage to return to the castle in 1322. The castle passed to John O Gaunt who strengthened it.
It's now managed by English Heritage and is paid entry unless you are a member.
