Delta del Llobregat & Montjuïc With the Gravelbike

Would you like a little after-work stroll along the banks of the Llobregat? Even if this side of Barcelona is strongly characterized by the port, airport and industrial zone, it is also worth a trip in this area, because you gain a completely new perspective on your city.

From Plaza España, the extension of the Paralel goes dead straight, across Sants and Esplugues de Llobregat. After only ten kilometers you will reach the banks of the Llobregat. It is the second longest river in Catalonia and you are now following its last section to the mouth of the sea.

A varied gravel path leads along the shore, which you follow for the next ten kilometers. Just before the mouth you can climb a lookout tower and admire the delta from above. At the very end of the track, where the path ends, there are two abandoned houses of the Carrabineri barracks to discover. The planes take off and land over your head, because you are right next to the airport - a really special atmosphere.

Then it goes across the Zona Industrial and Zona Franca back towards the city. You will be amazed that even in this area there are real bike lanes. You're getting to the foot of Montjuïc - how about one last little climb to enjoy the sunset? A small dirt road leads you up, you reach the Castell de Port, a ruined castle that towers over the port on a steep slope. A final descent brings you back to where you started, Plaza España. If you don't want to make the detour over Montjuïc, just go straight on and back along Gran Vía.

Numerous industries were located in the Llobregat basin in the 19th and 20th centuries that took advantage of its energy and water, highlighting the so-called "industrial colonies". The river water receives numerous contributions of pollution from industries and liquid waste from the urban centers located along its course, although efforts are being made to reduce them. In addition, the Llobregat today suffers from a peculiar source of contamination due to residues from the potassium mines, which make its salinity high.

The Llobregat basin is the source of drinking water for towns such as Sabadell, Hospitalet or much of Barcelona itself.

Semáforo de la Albufera

Highlight • Historical Site

Also known as the "Signal House", the Semáforo was a historic building built at the end of the 19th century in the area known as the Albufera, on the south bank of the mouth of the Llobregat.

Its mission was to regulate the traffic of ships towards the port of Barcelona, by means of some optical telegraphs that served as traffic lights.
