Loft Crag Summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

Loft Crag is one of the fells collectively known as the Langdale Pikes. I particularly love the view of this mountain from it's neighbour, Pike of Stickle. Loft Crag is 2,238 feet (682 m) in height and the views to the surrounding Langdale Pikes from the top are outstanding. I paused for 20 minutes to enjoy some home baked lemon drizzle cake here whilst looking across to Harrison Stickle. The sight of Windermere in the distance is also a great view from the summit.

Pike of Stickle

Highlight • Natural Monument

Pike of Stickle, also called Pike o' Stickle, is a fell in the English Lake District. It reaches a height of 709 metres and lies in the central part of the national park in the valley of Great Langdale. The fell is one of three fells that make up the picturesque Langdale Pikes (the others being Harrison Stickle and Loft Crag), one of the best-known areas in Lakeland. A "stickle" is a hill with a steep, prominent rocky summit, while a "pike" is a hill with a pointed summit; the name is therefore partly tautological.

Harrison Stickle

Highlight • Viewpoint

The greatest of the Langdale Pikes. Harrison Stickle is a conspicuous notch in the skyline for many miles around and lives up to this promise with sensational views to Crinkle Crags and Bowfell. Ghyll scrambling of the finest quality can be found on nearby Stickle Ghyll.

Pavey Ark

Highlight • Climb

Pavey Ark will forever hold a special place in my heart! It was my 214th Wainwright - the final peak bagging cherry on top of my first Wainwright round back in 2018. I visited it again in 2021 and had a lovely warm feeling overlooking Stickle Tarn once again. What stunning views. Jack's Rake is a great scramble if you have a head for heights and enjoy putting your hands on the rock. For those wanting a more traditional walk, Pavey Ark can be approached from multiple other angles that avoid scrambling. The last time I hiked Pavey Ark, I approached it from Harrison Stickle and left towards Raise.

Summit of Thunacar Knott

Highlight • Viewpoint

Thunacar Knott is a Wainwright fell in the Central Lake District. According to Wainwright, ‘Thunacar Knott is completely unphotogenic…this uninspiring characteristic extends to the whole fell, which is quite deficient in interest.’

On this basis, you wonder why he included it in his guidebooks! But, I do love the view to the two classic mountains of Bowfell and Great Gable from here.

Geographically the centre of the Lakes; worth it just for the setting.

Sergeant Man Summit

Highlight • Viewpoint

Sergeant Man is a fell that’s part of the ‘Langdale Pikes’ and has a summit height of 736 m (2,415 ft)

Stickle Tarn

Highlight • Natural

Nestled below the great craggy ramparts of Pavey Ark and Harrison Stickle, Stickle Tarn is surely one of the Lake District's most dramatically situated and beautiful tarns. Pavey Ark's great cliff towers over the water, home to Jack's Rake, a superb grade one scramble. Whether peak bagging, scrambling or wild swimming, Stickle Tarn is a place you won't soon forget.

Day 13: High Raise loop from Stickle Gill

A superb day of hiking today around the Langdale Pikes. These are a compact group of iconic, rugged mountain peaks in the Langdale Valley near Ambleside. The most popular summits include Pike of Stickle, Harrison Stickle, Loft Crag, High Side, and Pavey Ark. They didn’t disappoint, and we had some quality scrambling …
The Langdale Pikes, is an iconic walk in the Central Lake District.
And for those bagging Wainwrights, this hike takes in: Loft Crag, Pike of Stickle, Harrison Stickle, Pavey Ark, Thunacar Knott, High Raise, Sergeant Man, Stickle Tarn
📍 The New Dungeon Ghyll (The hotel offers car-park only options for a small fee and cheaper than the NT car-park)
🥾 …
My first hike for months due to my health being a bit rubbish, but what a beast of a hike to get me back into it, and it felt amazing being back out in the mountains surrounded by nature 🤩 Gorgeous sunny weather (way too hot for me tbh 🥵), stunning views all the way round and to cap it …
A scramble up Jacks Rake is not for the faint hearted! We took on this challenge and then headed off to bag some of the surrounding Wainwrights. The views were amazing, especially those from Sargeant Man down the valley.
