This route has the Tour Magazine seal of approval. So it's rideable - in Italy. A really beautiful mountain ride through tiny, ancient, picturesque mountain villages. Hardly any cars. Views of the summit round off the beautiful overall impression. I'm happy that I managed to get up to 18% with the old Campa gears and 28 rear sprocket. In Elva there were Tris di Antipasti and Ravioli fatto da mano.... then you manage the last 700 meters to the Passo di Sampeyre at 2284 m. The downhill surface is OK overall. You can ride a road bike in Italy but you just have to know exactly WHERE 😊 Very nice route.
The first 40-45 km of the tour were almost all covered in the shade with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees. The climb towards Sampeyre practically starts from the car park where I left the car, but from Pessa onwards the slopes begin to become significant, then from Cucchiales Sottano up to San Martino Superiore the climb breaks in two with even downhill sections. The last 11 km are almost all in double figures with a few sections that let you breathe. Unfortunately I have to point out many stretches of asphalt in disastrous conditions.
I started a bit lazy, but soon fresh air filled my body and mind with new enthusiasm and energy ⚡️⚡️⚡️ To shorten my route, I spontaneously added a climb to Montemale di Cuneo, just 12% gradient... 🤣🤣 Then two very nice Italians allowed me to catch their wheel and we were just flying like crazy up the Val Maira 🚀🚀🚀 Then the delight of the real climb begun. Some would rather call it a torment, but one does not exclude the other 😁 Especially in 38 degrees C... So altogether it's not an easy climb, but definitely doable and worth the suffering 😁 Views are amazing. The contrasting or rather complementary softness of meadows and roughness of rocks are amazing! I loved Italians who came there by cars just to sit together, play cards, read books, drink wine, and enjoy Sunday ☀️🤌💛 so did I!! Quick downhill, ice-cream in Sampeyre, and facing the wind on the sprint to the train station in Savigliano.
