This hike is considered easy, making it suitable for most fitness levels, including beginners and families with children. The route is approximately 6.85 kilometers (4.25 miles) long with an elevation gain of about 180 meters (590 feet).
The trail features a diverse terrain, including gravel paths, asphalt, unpaved sections, and dedicated hiking paths. A unique aspect is the requirement to walk directly in the river at certain points, so be prepared for wet feet and wear appropriate footwear with good grip. Small wooden bridges are present for some crossings.
The trail starts from Macisvenda. While specific parking details aren't provided, you can typically find parking within the village to begin your circular route. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival.
While the research doesn't explicitly state dog-friendliness, many natural trails in Spain allow dogs on a leash. Given the need to walk in the river, ensure your dog is comfortable with water and that you can manage them safely in such conditions. Always practice responsible pet ownership and clean up after your dog.
The trail can be particularly refreshing during hotter months due to its proximity to the water. However, it's generally enjoyable year-round. Consider checking the river's flow beforehand, especially after heavy rains, as walking in the river is a key part of the experience.
No permits or entrance fees are required to hike this trail. The Chicamo River Canyon is part of the Río Chícamo Site of Community Importance, which is a protected natural area, but it is freely accessible to the public for recreational activities like hiking.
You'll experience a striking contrast of arid 'badlands' or 'lunar landscapes' with lush riverside vegetation. The trail winds through the beautiful Chicamo River Canyon, showcasing oleanders, salt marsh plants, thyme, and numerous date palm trees. The geological formations, including sediment deposits and rock folds, are also a significant feature.
Given the requirement to walk directly in the river, wear shoes with good grip that you don't mind getting wet. Quick-drying clothing is also recommended. Bring plenty of water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and snacks. Trekking poles might be helpful for stability in the river sections.
Yes, the trail offers a historical perspective on water supply and irrigation in Murcia. You can find ancient aqueducts and mills along its course, providing a glimpse into the region's past.
This circular hike typically takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes to complete, though your actual duration may vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
Macisvenda is a small village, and while specific establishments aren't detailed, you can generally find local cafes or restaurants in such areas to refresh yourself after your hike. It's a good idea to check local listings or ask residents upon arrival.
We hiked the circular route on the Río Chícamo at a relaxed pace. If you are walking along the course of the river and don't know how to proceed, if in doubt, you can always walk directly along the river 😉 Safe shoes are quite good, but we also made it in bathing shoes 😆 The circular route itself is poorly signposted, but you can still find it. Nature is impressive. The water is particularly refreshing in summer and there is a bathing area for swimming. We had a lot of fun and a fantastic view.
