Embark on a challenging road cycling adventure with the Wensleydale & Swaledale loop from Bainbridge. This difficult route covers 35.9 miles (57.8 km) and features a significant elevation gain of 3762 feet (1147 metres), typically taking around 3 hours and 16 minutes to complete. You will experience varied terrain, from well-paved roads to potentially unpaved segments, as you cycle through windswept hills, expansive moors, and deep glacial valleys, passing charming villages and stone barns. The landscape transforms from drystone walls and wildflower meadows to wild, remote moorland as you move between the distinct dales.

To make the most of your ride, consider planning your visit for late spring, specifically May to June, or early autumn, from September to October. During these periods, you can expect milder weather conditions and fewer crowds on the roads. The route starts from Bainbridge, a good base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Be prepared for a hard road ride that requires very good fitness due to the challenging climbs and descents throughout the loop.

This loop is one of the most popular road cycling routes in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an area well-known for its excellent cycling opportunities. The region's challenging climbs have even hosted parts of the prestigious Tour de France route, highlighting the quality of the terrain. As you ride, you will witness the natural beauty of both Wensleydale and Swaledale, characterized by prominent limestone features and quiet roads where sheep often outnumber cars, offering a peaceful and immersive experience.

Top of The Fleak

Highlight • Summit

Climbing out of Swaledale to Askrigg, this is one of the tougest local climbs with stunning views for the moments when not chewing the handlebars. A series of ramps climb away from the river each with a little respite. There's a significant & welcome downhill, before hostilities are resumed with a bang! A drag leads to a nasty short ramp. 20% near the top. Vicious. Defeat this & there's some easy climbing and great views. The road turns upwards again, sweeping steeply towards the top, briefly hitting 20% again. If you can look behind/left the view is again stunning. A couple more ramps won't trouble you if you have got this far as you top out at 545m.

The descent to Askrigg needs a little care. When you get to the level of the trees, the road narrows and there is a steep right hand corner with poor visibility. Watch out for gravel in the corners immediately following.

Good, wasn't it?

Climbing to the Fleak summit is one of the toughest around. There’s no shame in stopping for a break to admire Swaledale. This climb has great views. Pause, catch your breath & enjoy!

Number 51 in Simon Warren's list of 100 greatest climbs, Tan Hill is a long 10km drag to the top from its start point near Whaw. It heads to the north west from here so if you're travelling in the opposite direction, you have a lovely shallow descent to enjoy.

The climb has an average gradient of 2% but with a kicker near the top of 10% so save a little energy for that as you summit.

At 1,732 feet (528m), this historic Inn is the highest in Great Britain!

On the border of Cumbria and the Yorkshire Dales near the village of Keld, the pub is a lively and welcoming place frequented by cyclists, walkers, tourists and locals alike, and puts on many events including live music and festivals.

As well as the great food, you'll find rooms and camping available here.

Tan Hill Road Climb

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

Just when you thought that the switchbacks at West Stonesdale were the hard bit of the climb to the pub, you hit this.

A gradual drag leads to a bend right. The road kicks up & starts to bite. It's not long, but it keeps getting steeper & steeper. Lurch over this & your path to the pub is all but done.

Cross Tops Ascent and Descent into Askrigg

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

From the north, starting with a 25% ascent for 250m, followed by around 3 miles of steady uphill. That first steep climb takes it out of you and makes the rest of the ascent harder than it would otherwise be. But it's a quiet road with good views, and worth the effort. Plus you get the pay off of a long, steep descent into Askrigg
