This route was planned by komoot.
The greenway is built on a former railway line, offering a generally flat and easy route. The surface alternates between asphalt sections and smooth, compacted fine gravel, making it comfortable for walking and cycling.
The one-way distance is approximately 5.5 km to 5.7 km. A round trip is about 11 km, which can typically be completed in 1 hour and 30 minutes with stops for cyclists, or 2.5 to 3 hours for walkers.
Along the route, you'll find magnificent coastal views, natural coves like La Renegà, and historical elements. Notable features include deep trenches, metal bridges, and an illuminated tunnel. You can also see historical watchtowers such as the Colomera Tower, Torre Bellver, and Torre de la Corda. Don't miss the Vía Verde del Mar (Oropesa-Benicàssim) itself, the Oropesa del Mar Lighthouse, and the Route of the Villas (Benicàssim).
The greenway connects the towns of Benicàssim and Oropesa del Mar, and you can access it from either municipality. Both towns offer parking options near the trailheads. Specific parking areas are usually well-marked.
Yes, the trail is generally flat and has a smooth surface of asphalt and compacted gravel, making it suitable for all ages, including families with children, strollers, and people with reduced mobility.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the greenway. However, it's always recommended to keep them on a leash and clean up after them to ensure a pleasant experience for all users.
The greenway can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn offer the most pleasant temperatures for walking or cycling. During summer, it's best to go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access the Benicàssim - Oropesa Greenway. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the greenway provides well-equipped rest areas along the route. Given its proximity to Benicàssim and Oropesa del Mar, you'll find cafes, restaurants, and other services easily accessible in both towns.
Yes, the route is part of the EuroVelo Route 8. It also passes through sections of the Vía Verde del Mar and Via Verda Benicàssim - Orpesa.
For a comfortable experience, bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and appropriate footwear. If you plan to swim in the coves, pack a towel and swimwear. Don't forget your camera for the scenic views!
Vías Verdes - Green Paths. These are disused railway lines that have been converted into routes for hikers and cyclists and on which motorized vehicles are prohibited. In Spain there are over 7,600 kilometers of disused railway lines and almost 2,200 kilometers of these have been converted into a total of 113 green paths that run through the whole of Spain. Because the tarred area is reserved for cyclists and the graveled area for pedestrians, the proverbial coexistence works quite well. I noticed that there is very little garbage on the side of the path. I had seen much worse on other hikes here in the country in the last few weeks and was always shocked by it. It is probably cleaned regularly, like the beaches. Parking spaces in Benicasim in the immediate vicinity of the path (and the campsite I am at), on the other hand, are completely littered. The path was very easy to walk in a T-shirt when it felt like 20 degrees, and that was in early February when it was below zero where I live in Germany. The fact that you walk back the same way is not a negative thing. With this great view, you always see new views in every direction. My father always used to say: When you walk back the same way, you look at it from the other direction and it's like a new path.
