This route was planned by komoot.
The trail officially starts at La Fruitière, located in the Lutour valley. You'll find parking available at this starting point.
This is considered a half-day walk. Most hikers complete the route to Estom Lake and back in about 4 to 6 hours, depending on pace and stops.
The initial kilometers from La Fruitière are relatively flat, following a clear track alongside the Gave de Lutour river. As you progress, the path gradually climbs, becoming steeper and stonier, especially after the Portail de Limouras. The valley floor rises in steps, characteristic of glacial valleys. Proper footwear is recommended due to some uneven sections.
Yes, the trail is generally considered of moderate difficulty, making it suitable for families with children and those with a reasonable level of fitness. Its captivating scenery, including waterfalls and diverse flora, adds to its family-friendly appeal.
You'll encounter diverse scenery, including lush green valleys, pine forests, and meadows. Notable features include the Estom Waterfall and numerous cascades from the Gave de Lutour. The highlight is the pristine glacial Estom Lake and the Pouey-Caut Hut, which offers a welcoming stop.
The trail offers opportunities to spot local fauna. You might see herds of cows and sheep grazing in the pastures, horses, chamois, and even Pyrenean isards, particularly if you start your hike in the early hours.
As this trail is located within the Pyrenees National Park, dogs are generally not permitted, even on a leash, to protect the local wildlife and environment. Please check the latest regulations before your visit.
The trail is best enjoyed from late spring to early autumn. Early summer is particularly vibrant with rhododendron glades in bloom. Always check local weather conditions before heading out, as mountain weather can change rapidly.
There are generally no entrance fees to access the Pyrenees National Park for hiking. However, specific regulations apply, especially regarding dogs, camping, and environmental protection. Always respect the park's rules to preserve its natural beauty.
Yes, the Refuge d'Estom, located by the lake, has a spring where you can refill your water bottles. It's always wise to carry sufficient water for your hike, especially on warmer days.
Yes, the route to Lac d'Estom is part of the official "Refuge et Lac d'Estom" trail. It also briefly intersects with sections of the "Sentier Falisse" and the "Passerelle de Pouey Caut" trails.
I forgot to start the App..there's a big section missing...very nice climb...very nice at the refuge..the descent was easier than I thought...a foot bath on the way back in the cool water of the torrent....
This hike starts from the La Fruitière car park on a path which climbs steadily through lush landscapes, flat-bottomed clearings, the stream and waterfalls. The second part climbs correctly but without any particular difficulties, following the Gave du Lutour. And we arrive at a grandiose landscape: Lake Estom. The way back is the same as the way out.
