No, this route is generally considered a hard and technical hike, often described as being at the border between hiking and climbing. It requires significant physical fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. Sections involve scrambling over rock formations, making it unsuitable for beginners.
The terrain is highly varied. You'll start with relatively easy, shaded forest paths, but it quickly transitions to a more demanding route with significant rock formations, loose rocks, sand, and switchbacks. The distinctive red and pink Triassic sandstones of the 'Agulles' offer good grip, but be prepared for scrambling and technical sections.
The trail offers impressive panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea, the coastline, and Benicàssim from its highest points, with visibility extending to the Columbretes Islands on clear days. Key highlights include the Santa Àgueda Needles Pass and the Collado Agulles del Rojal Trail. You can also observe remnants of old sandstone block production along the ascent.
The Agulles de Santa Àgueda Full Loop (PR-CV 397) is located in Benicàssim, within the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park. While specific parking areas aren't detailed, hikers typically start from designated parking spots near the park's access points in Benicàssim. It's advisable to check local maps or park information for the most convenient trailhead parking.
To avoid the most strenuous conditions, it's best to hike outside of the warmer summer months. Spring and autumn offer more moderate temperatures, making the demanding sections of the trail more enjoyable. Always check the weather forecast before you go.
As this trail is located within the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park, dogs are generally permitted but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Given the technical and challenging nature of the terrain, ensure your dog is fit enough for scrambling and loose rocks.
No, there are typically no permits or entrance fees required to hike the PR-CV 397 trail within the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
When hiking in the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park, it's important to stay on marked trails, respect the natural environment, and carry out all your trash. The park is home to diverse Mediterranean flora and fauna. While there are no entrance fees, be aware of fire restrictions, especially during dry seasons, and always bring sufficient water and sun protection.
Given the trail's difficulty and varied terrain, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, sufficient water (especially during warmer months), sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and appropriate clothing for mountain conditions. GPS navigation is highly recommended as some parts may lack clear official markers.
Yes, GPS navigation is highly recommended as some sections of the trail may not have clear official markers. Be aware that ascending to the very top of some of the 'needles' (like Agulla Grossa) is extremely difficult, potentially dangerous, and in some cases, prohibited due to being a natural micro-reserve. Stick to the main PR-CV 397 homologated path for a challenging but safer experience.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Agulles de Santa Àgueda, Sender del Mas de la Comba, and Camí dels Covarxos trails, among others. This allows for potential variations or connections to other routes within the Desert de les Palmes Natural Park.
Beautiful but challenging hike through the Desert de les Palmes with magnificent views. From the top of the pass, along the ridge, the route requires a certain amount of surefootedness and climbing skills. For the most part, there are no longer any trail markings or they are barely recognizable, so we had to keep looking for the way through the rocks and past the abysses.
