Late on Saturday afternoon, after the rain, we set off from Ocholt on the mill route, which officially begins in Bad Zwischenahn. There is more information about the tour here and you can download it as a GPX: https://www.ammerland-touristik.de/rad-aktiv/tour/muehlenroute, I got it from here @Ammerland Touristik. Since the tour goes through Ocholt, I quickly moved the starting point here and we were able to start directly from home. Some of the mills are not directly on the route or are privately owned and can only be admired from a distance.
A very nice tour. Unfortunately, I didn't include all the mills—I'll do that next time. Let's see if you can also visit some of them from the inside.
Ammerland: The region with cold headwinds, historic windmills, the Rügenwalder Mill, a watermill, a wind farm, and lots of cows, sheep, horses, etc. ... and of course with a café ☕️ and cakes 🍰 🤩
Today we drove the first Ammerland themed tour: the mill route. All themed tours are available online under "Ammerland theme tours", and can also be downloaded with GPS data directly into komoot. The tour was very nice, along the Lower Saxony mill route. Mostly easy to drive, but some of the tracks were badly damaged and you had to be very careful.
And another tour through the beautiful Ammerland. This time I drove the mill route. The course of the route leads through the most beautiful Moor and pasture land with varied and winding passages and is almost paved throughout. The route leads past many tree nurseries and farms six Ammerland mills. Tip: Be sure to try an ice cream in the Eis Manufaktur. The pistachio and lemon-basil ice cream are particularly tasty. Weather: 🌤️☀️ 27 degrees
Journey of discovery to six different mills The Ammerland landscape has always been shaped by windmills and watermills. When the mills flourished at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, 47 mills still existed, nine of which are still functional and can be visited today. The 47-kilometer route leads to six Ammerland mills, which could be preserved for posterity with great voluntary commitment. The course of the route leads through the most beautiful moorland and pastureland with varied and winding passages and is almost entirely paved.
On the mill route in beautiful Ammerland, the first stop was the Howieker water mill, built in 1608. It is a little off the tour in a wooded area and also offers the opportunity to take a break or to explore more of the facility. Since 1947 the mill has been maintained by the Ocholt-Howiek local history association. You continue on very good paths to the Zwischenahner Meer, which we have almost completely circumnavigated on the hiking/cycling path. Embedded in a lot of nature, there are always views of the water. At the beautifully landscaped Kurpark, from where excursion boats also leave, there is a little more hustle and bustle, here there is the opportunity to strengthen yourself in a café or restaurant. Shortly before the end of the tour, the mill landscape window is located on a small branch. On the small observation tower you have a nice overview of the landscape.
Unfortunately, the tour was not recorded at the beginning. It can happen on the last day of vacation. Sorry, the actual length of the tour was 48.4 km.🤔
